How is my fit?

Post by scottjf8 » Tue Aug 02, 2011 7:21 pm

Been using the medium on my Swift FX. Saw my DME and she said I should use the S or XS (Gave me one.)

However both of those, while they fit well, are noisy when I exhale. I tried the XS last night and woke up at 3am with my exhale whistling.

I just tried all 3 of them with my kids listening (hehe) and they all said the M is much quieter.

So how does it fit?

You mean I should be able to put 2 fingers in between the strap and my cheek?

So Looser is better then tighter? I just got a swift FX for her today. tonight will be my first time using in.. so I am trying to get some tips to using it before I go to bed. I used to have a full face mask.. but I kept having leaks into my eyes and it is just too hot having all of that mask on my face right now. I live in Vegas!!

At this point (almost a month of use), I think It should feel comfortable and just tight enough to stay on. The band on top should be tight enough to help keep it in your nose, but not so tight you are miserable.

The thing I struggle with is the velcro band hurting my ear. It sits right on top of my ear (like glasses would) and in the middle of the night, starts to get sore.

Ideally that strap shouldn't be touching your ear. The backstrap of the FX is notorious for slipping down the back of the head. But some of us have ears (or one ear) placed higher on our heads than average, and that can cause problems. So it will take a bit of detective work to figure out how to get that strap off your ear OR how to protect the ear from the strap.

Three things to try:

1) That back strap may be a bit too low. If you can tighten the top silicone strap a bit without triggering the dreaded piggy nose, that may help. But if tightening that top strap triggers piggy nose, loosen it right back up. Because you don't want piggy nose---it's painful.

2) Put some velcro on the side of the strap that fits next to your head. This will help anchor the strap around the TOP BACK part of your head so that it should be passing ABOVE the ear. But if you've got an ear that's placed just a wee bit too high on the side of your head, this might not work without pulling the pillows out of alignment. In that case, look at idea 3.

3) Contact Padacheek. She can make a fleece cover that will cover the entire silicone part of the FX frame including that nasty little area at the temple where the velcro strap comes in. And that might help.

Yep, squished up nostrils from top strap being too tight. There is another zoo resident that we use to describe therapy problem...chipmunk cheeks

Whatever works best is the right thing as far as nasal pillow size. I have extremely small nostrils and started with XS pillows, but felt like I was suffocating - maybe because my pressure is pretty low at 9.

I eventually worked up to a medium pillow, both for the Swift FX and LT and they work best for ME, and I keep both masks pretty loose. It seems the medium pillows move around less than the smaller sizes, so less leaks.

If you mess around with the straps, you can get the fit so the bottom one doesn't attempt to cut your ear off during the night It might mean loosing the bottom strap quite a bit and snugging up the top one so the bottom one sits a little higher.

I spend an episode of Jeopardy each night tweaking my mask for comfort so that when I lay down it feels almost like I'm not wearing one.

PS - yours does look a little tight across your cheeks. I can't quite get two fingers under mine, but I sleep on my stomach, however it's much looser than yours looks.

Cheers,
xena

Thanks for posting your picture! Mine fits just like yours does, so I've learned a lot from this thread. Also had piggy nose for a few nights, and didn't realize I wasn't supposed to!

My straps go higher above the cheeks My 95% leak rate is always 24. something and above (my pressure is a 8.6 10. Tried med and small pillows. Maybe I need to adust both straps. Quit wearing the chin strap didn't help much and bothers the teeth anyway.
