Some time back, someone posted a comment about some well-respected doctor--it may have been Dr. Krakow, Dr. Parks, or another doctor. They posted the approximate percentage of patients of this specialist that were given certain machines. I think there were three categories, like ASV, Bilevel, and perhaps CPAP, though I'm uncertain about that. I don't recall the percentages. I don't even recall for sure what the machines were. But let me just throw out a first approximation to what I am looking for:
30% of his patients end up on ASV
60% of his patients end up on bilevel
10% of his patients end up on CPAP
Again, let me stress, my memory is so fuzzy that I don't know if those were the machines (probably not) or percentages, and because I can't remember enough about it, I can't search effectively for it. I've tried. Can't seem to find the right combination of search terms. I am pretty sure that CPAP was either 0% or really low, which made this table unusual, since most doctors seem to try to fit as many of their patients with CPAP as possible.
Does anyone recall what I am trying to locate? If so, perhaps you can suggest some search terms that might help me out here.

I don't recall seeing a post covering that but then again was not following much for the past year, but, that looks just like what I'd expect to see in regard to Dr Krakow.LoQ wrote:Some time back, someone posted a comment about some well-respected doctor--it may have been Dr. Krakow, Dr. Parks, or another doctor. He regards Bilevel & ASV as his preferred choices and that is because he tends to get people with complications and who have failed on cpap or with their present Bilevel settings.
There can be no doubt that for OSA, cpap is the gold standard. No argument.
For the smaller percent of patients with some forms of Periodic Breathing (read CSA) then Bilevel / ASV are the recommended directions. COPD is Bilevel, CHF is ASV etc: etc: etc:
Also, for many of us who have side issues such as severe aerophagia, GERD, Silent GERD & other sensitivities, Bilevel can & does assist, but most modern Cpaps offer some form of Bilevel mimicry to help those situations out.
So, any stats showing a disproportionate commitment to Bilevel / ASV has to be viewed in context of who is doing the recommendations and why. & the stats for any one clinic/practitioner are almost certainly going to relate to their chosen area of SDB expertise. i.e. someone who has chosen CHF patients as his area of expertise is hardly likely to recommend very many CPAP machines.

PS LoQ re poor memory - I call it growing old but when it suits me I also blame it on SDB

Thank you for adding that perspective, an important reminder about context.dsm wrote:So, any stats showing a disproportionate commitment to Bilevel / ASV has to be viewed in context of who is doing the recommendations and why. & the stats for any one clinic/practitioner are almost certainly going to relate to their chosen area of SDB expertise. i.e. someone who has chosen CHF patients as his area of expertise is hardly likely to recommend very many CPAP machines.
I still would like to see the original post, if anyone can help me.
