why is it so Wrong??
To be a Mouth breather??? why chin straps and people tape there mouths shut (iv read on other posts) i can only breathe through my mouth,i have an appointment with E.N.T specalist this month to see why im still mega snoring on Cpap and i still feel very tired!! is this because i breathe through my mouth?? and Why is it better to breathe through your nose?? Thanks x x
Re: why is it so Wrong??
Hi Polly - there's nothing 'wrong' with it, but the point is that all the therapy air going in through your nose gets lost from your mouth instead of going down your airway....but using a full face mask (or taping, etc.) prevents that. While air might go into your mouth from your nose (with a FF mask on) it's not 'lost' to the outside and eventually goes down where it belongs.
Re: why is it so Wrong??
Polly, if you are using the Mirage Liberty, as shown in your profile, then you can breathe through your mouth and still be okay. That mask is designed for mouth breathers.
People who use nasal only masks will lose therapy through their mouths if the mouths cannot stay shut.

Re: why is it so Wrong??
There is nothing wrong, but nasal masks are typically smaller and more comfortable. If you can breath through your nose, you might want to. I actually found my problem, there are channels in the nose called turbinates that sometimes are larger for some people (like me). You can actually have these reduced in a simple in office ENT visit.
There is a test you can do yourself to determine if this is your problem, pick up a bottle of Afrin (or generic) and use it before bed. If you notice a difference, you might benefit from the procedure, because Afrin reduces the turbinates, but it also has nasty long term side effect including the exact opposite effect, so it's only a temporary solution. They say don't use it more than 2 weeks, my ENT said he doesn't like it more than 1 week.

AOT: I've read once in the article "Is it mental or is it dental" by dr Silkman, that while one is breathing through the nose there is bigger production of nitric oxide, it is something neccessary to good health. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitric_oxide, dr Silkman's article: http://nourishedmagazine.com.au/blog/ar ... tal-health

If you are using this mask " Mirage Liberty™ Full Face CPAP Mask with Nasal Pillows including Headgear" and you are still snoring then your pressure is WRONG for you. I mouth breathe and was snoring so bad I could be heard in another room but I haven't snored once with my full face masks. Try increasing your pressure a bit.pollyanna40 wrote:To be a Mouth breather??? why chin straps and people tape there mouths shut (iv read on other posts) i can only breathe through my mouth,i have an appointment with E.N.T specalist this month to see why im still mega snoring on Cpap and i still feel very tired!! is this because i breathe through my mouth?? and Why is it better to breathe through your nose?? The reason the ENT's prefer you to breathe through your nose is that your nose filters and humidifies the air making it better for the rest of your system.

Thinking of quitting CPAP?
No problem, here's the first thing to do when you quit:
Advanced funeral planning. When you give up CPAP, you'll probably need it.

Polly
Its ONLY wrong if you are using just nasal pillows or just mouth piece. With a ffm like yours you are fine. When you read here about someone complaining about chin straps or tape, take a look at the equipment before you panic...they will be NOT using a full face mask.

Ahhhhhhhhh i get it!!! so my mask is good!! so i can breathe through my mouth and be ok? im still having my nose and workings on checked just in case somet isnt right! i am still very tired still on cpap, and showing alot of Vibrations (snoring)..my machine is Auto so i cant turn pressure up as it goes off my own breathing,(somet like that)lol..ok now i feel better,i can put up with my mouth feeling like sandpaper ! hahahahaha,Thanks for all your replys and advice!!! x x
Re: why is it so Wrong??
You are using machine in APAP mode with a range of pressures.. minimum and maximum?pollyanna40 wrote:i am still very tired still on cpap, and showing alot of Vibrations (snoring)..my machine is Auto so i cant turn pressure up as it goes off my own breathing
You most certainly can change the pressure. If you are having a huge number of snores being scored then sometimes a tiny increase in the minimum will take care of them. Sometimes they need to be taken care of.
If you could post an image of one of your daily detailed reports someone could offer some specific ideas perhaps that might help you feel better.

Look it up and adjust it. The information is here. You can always adjust it back down for the perps to look at. Don't ask, tell them what you want.pollyanna40 wrote:ohhh,i know i sound like a numbty,lol..but the hospital sets it and also checks it every 4wks,i wouldnt know how to do it,im goin next wk so i will mention it to them..but because the machine isnt mine,it belongs to the hospital,i cant mess with it..its the NHS in this country!! as long as i let them do it,i get everything Free!! i will defo ask them if more pressure will help reduce the snoring,c wot they say!! Re: why is it so Wrong??
I said you could change the pressure (because you said you couldn't because of the way the machine is set up), didn't mean that you should. Sorry if I gave that impression. I might say "should" based on software report though. I suspect the machine is set with minimum pressure to low.
You should though become very familiar with what you can do and what your machine can do. You should also become familiar with the reports and what the data is showing. Becoming familiar doesn't mean you have to change something but it will sure help you understand what is maybe going on.
You most certainly can look at the data on the SD card using software. Looking is not changing anything.
You have choices. It does involve some education. If you wish to learn what all this means there are lots of people here willing to help. Read first post in thread to see your choices. Again, looking at data harms nothing. Your supplier will never know.

You say you aren't feeling so good. Get the reports so you can see what is going on. Leaks could be a factor. Need the detailed reports to have any idea what is going on.

Yes, but if she DOES adjust her pressure, it will show in the data stored in her machine (sd card) and she might *get in trouble* as she said "its the NHS in this country!! as long as i let them do it,i get everything Free!! But as ya'll have said, they need to look into raising her minimum pressure a little bit. For me, reducing mask leakage, and raising min pressure, greatly reduced (eliminated) snoring.

Is it possible you are losing air out of your nose with the mirage liberty? You could develope leaks with the nose pillows after you go to sleep and the machine is pushing air into your mouth and out your nose. Just wondering. Does your chart show any leaks?
