Can you still snore on APAP?

Post by synonymous » Tue Jul 26, 2011 11:03 am

This morning I woke up and saw my wife wasn't in bed. I thought maybe she got up earlier than usual. After work I asked her what happened. She said I snored and she moved to the next room. I though 'No freaking way I snored...' I asked if maybe my mouth was open and she was hearing air or something and she said she was pretty sure it was snoring and she didn't want to bother me. I explained that if I'm snoring then she should wake me.

So...either she's dreaming I'm snoring, air is coming out of the mask (Although it didn't show in leak data) or I actually snored...which I assume would have shown in data as well. She said next time she would wake me but what I really want is video of the event. I wasn't fatigued or anything, I felt great...aside from the infection in my leg that is killing me. So...can you snore?

If you opened your mouth during sleep, the air rushing out of your mouth could be mistaken as a snore. Try taping, chin strap or FF mask.

My own snoring woke me up yeterday morning. I had my mouth taped, wore a chinstrap and was hosed up. Figure that one out! I haven't pulled up my data from last night and I don't think my machine shows snores, or at least, I've never noticed a snore before.

Come to think of it, early on in cpap therapy my husband told me I was snoring. Pre cpap I really was not a "snorer" so I knew it had to be something different. It actually was air escaping through my mouth - I was on nasal pillows at the time. I told him to be sure to wake me if I was making noises so I could correct whatever was leaking.

I've snored on APAP, although it was mostly while sleeping on my back. I can't say I would recommend taping your mouth shut, but it could be your pressure range needs to be adjusted. When I narrowed my pressure range my snoring went away. In my case, it was mainly raising my minimum pressure.

Of course you can snore while on CPAP and APAP. See the following of my graphs. USUALLY, it means that pressure is not hi enough to suppress the snoring.

Hmmm isn't that true that you can snore on CPAP/APAP/BiPAP and whatever what when your pressure is too low and it doesn't "keep" the soft palate splinted and stiffen?

You show S9 Autoset in your profile. Are you using in in APAP mode? If you are snoring enough (yes it can happen) enough to disturb sleeping partner, you might consider a small increase in minimum pressure if you are using APAP or small increase in cpap pressure. Just see if it makes any difference. Doesn't have to be a huge change though.

I'm finding that I snore while the ramp is in use (45 minutes). After I reach my prescribed pressure of 11, I rarely snore. Hypopneas/CA are another issue tho..

Again, if snoring is so bad bed partner is complaining then it needs to be worked on.
The pressure is not optimal.

I can't imagine your wife would be telling you snore if you didn't...was it a problem previously? does your mouth drop open at night when you finally get to sleep......try the ultimate chin strap for snoring....and if you don't have a problem breathing thru your nose at night in bed, check out the ultimate chin strap for sleep apnea...same principle....keeps mouth closed while its unique design puts the right pressure on the necessary points to keep your air passages open.it truly is the only one on the market that works! goo luck!
