Noobies. Do you wonder if CPAP therapy helps?

Post by datara » Mon Jul 25, 2011 10:16 pm

I am a relative noobie myself, so I thought I would share
I quit smoking five days ago (thanks to E cigs, could never quit until I found them), and have just used ONKOR (thank you, thank you and thank you again cpapdork). I don't know if it's coincidence or not but my average AHI over the last five days is 1.07 down from 2.52, and RDI 2.96 down from 4.89 from the first 15 days. Now when I went in for my sleep study my AHI was 79.6 supine, and worse when on my back. (I've only had my machine for 21 days, the first month was on my trial unit)
Two things, I'm pretty sure that quitting smoking has helped, but I'm positive that CPAP therapy works!!!
I had huge dark circles under my eyes - disappearing, people around me see it in a huge way, I feel it in my energy levels, and I notice that I'm having to break in a new hole on my belt (the good side).
I know it seems like a pain in %&/!! to strap this thing on every night, but I truly believe that this machine is not only saving my life, but also giving me back my old one as well. Obviously results are going to vary, and I could regress as well, but you can`t monitor your progress if you don`t use the machine, and I know that before my diagnosis I didn`t think that I had any problems (well OK maybe mentally).
I don`t suffer back or chest pain when I wake up, like I did before starting therapy.
For me this has been nothing but positives, I also kept an open mind about using the CPAP, I wasn`t thrilled about it, but it had to be better than the alternatives (10 to 12 tylenol with codeine daily)

Keep an open mind, ask questions of the wonderful people here or at least, use the search to find answers to your questions and use the machine religiously.

Good Luck and happy zzzz`s

Congrats, Datara! That's great news.

At the top of the home page, there's a place to post success stories and that's always good for newbies to check out when they need encouragement during the difficulties getting used to CPAP at first.

Congrats! Especially on the smoking, I think that is probably the hardest of all of it.

(P.S. Supine is on your back. Prone is on your front. I always remember this because I like playing snipers in video games.)

I've been on 3 days now, and while last night was a rougher night than the past few, I've already had a few people mention how I look a little better rested. Now, I haven't been shy about starting (we tend to be really open in our office), so maybe they just think they're noticing.

Personally, there are times where I feel the same, and there are times where I feel better. I do know that my usual 2 o'clock flop-back-in-the-office-chair-and-silently-swear hasn't happened yet, but it's been a busy week.
