how does the ora/nasal device feel?

Post by newname » Mon Jul 18, 2011 5:59 pm

I saw a few on line by RespCare, Fisher/Paykel, Resmed. Does it feel suffocating at first with the air blowing into your nose and your mouth?
I've been using Activa LT because it's the only comfortable mask for me so far. I tried the Comfort Lite II about 2 years ago and I liked the freedom of no straps on my face. I'm thinking of trying it again for the summer because I find the straps on my face too hot.
Which would be more comfortable, an oral/nasal mask or Comfort Lite II with mouth tape?
Even though the sleep tech said I did not sleep with my mouth open, I think I do. I talk in my sleep so my mouth has to be open. I'm probably not getting full therapy when my mouth opens. I sleep differently in the sleep lab because I hardly sleep at all with all that stuff on my face and head, therefore I don't think I'll ever get an accurate sleep study.

The idea is to try to keep your mouth closed..If you open your mouth, it is problibly to exhale....I don't think anyone can tell you what will be more comfortable on YOU. Everyone is different that's why there are so many masks. You may get a dozen different answers to that question. A positive attitude is essential to be successful with CPAP....you sound negative.

I am also currently using a nasal pillow.... find it very comfortable at first, but do notice some minor irritation to the nostrals before I fall asleep... sort of need to pull off for a few seconds before putting it back on to make it feel comfortable.... My partner keeps telling me that when she wakes up at night (due to the cats) she can hear my mouth sort of gargling or bubbling as if air is escaping from my mouth... so it probably reduced the air pressure to keep my air passage clear all the time? I have to admit this morning I woke up still feeling tired and foggy.

I have ordered a new F&P full face one, so hopefully that will solve the issue. in terms of comfort... I admit it does look kinda daunting, but I do remember the first time I put on the nasal pillow, which was difficult at first to get used to... but after a short while, it doesnt feels like its always getting in the way.... I am hoping I will have a similar outcome with the full face.

LSAT: I don't know why you think I sound negative. I'm just trying to find out how the oral/nasal masks feel in general. I know each mask feels differently for each person, but I'm trying to figure out how this mask would feel having the air coming in from mouth and nose at the same time. I'm wondering if its something that takes getting used to? I had no problem with Activa Lt from the very beginning. I just want something with less on my face for the summer months. I know how the Comfort Lite II feels and am wondering about the oral/nasal device.
Anyone using one of these types of masks, please let me know how you like the air coming in both places at once. Does it feel the same as a nasal mask or not?

Hi - it really doesn't feel a lot different once you've used it a couple of times, and the air doesn't really come from 'both' places, there's just a wider area that it flows over - and make your life easier, call if a 'full face' mask - the proper name - so more people will be likely to respond to what's familiar. There is a 'total' face mask that really covers your whole face, but that's a different thing altogether (and very subject to leaks from what I've heard).

I love my Hybrid so much, I now have 2 . I have the respcare hybrid and I find it much better than nasal pillows. With the nasal pillows ALL the air went up my nose and stuffed me up, with the hybrid the air is more diffused. I had a bunch of allergy problems last week and couldn't breath out of my nose but since I use a hybrid, which is technically a full face mask, I could still breath through my mouth. There is so much less on my face, so I can put my glasses on if I want to read for a bit, not like a regular full face mask.

Nanwilson:
Does the mouth piece go inside your mouth or just cover your mouth? Is it comfortable on your lips and teeth?

Julie:
Why is it called a full face mask. I thought those covered the whole face. Aren't the two pieces separate? I thought there was a mouth piece and a separate nose piece??

if you go to CPAP.com, and look under masks, it is seperated into different type of masks... you can click on them and it would show you how they look like and how they sort of fit on your face...

Full Face mask looks like the oxygen mask they use in hospital that cover your nose and mouth
Hybrid looks like a combination of a nose pillow with a cover over your mouth... dont think it goes into your mouth like a snorkel...
while a total full face mask looks like those old WW1 gas mask that covers your whole face...

Hi - my UltraMirage FF is just like the nasal version but extends a bit lower to cover my mouth... that's all and you can see it on Cpap.com.

No, they are not separate pieces. The mouth piece sits over your mouth and the nose pillows go up to your nose from the mouth piece. As someone said go to cpap.com and look at the pictures, its is categorized as a full face mask but on the pics it is a hybrid. It is a Respcare/Innomed Hybrid, comes with three sizes of mouth cushions and 3 sizes of nose pillows. We find which one fits us best, then we trade the extra cushions and pillows with other users for the size we want. As a matter of fact I am doing a trade today, I use the medium and one of the other members here uses the large so we just trade. There are two types of hybrid, the one I mentioned and the Liberty....you will see when you look at the pictures and reviews at cpap.com.
