Red on nose between eyes?

Post by synonymous » Sat Jul 16, 2011 7:23 am

This may be similar to a previous poster.

I have been using something similar to the Mirage Activa™ LT Nasal CPAP Mask with Headgear. It's that shape (But I don't actually know what brand). About 2 days back I woke up and my nose in that one little spot, where you'd rest your glasses on, was red and sore. I thought I might have either have tightened it a bit much (But I never adjusted it after the DME showed me how to use it). I was fine for 5 days and then day 6 I've got the redness happening. I put the mask on and it felt 'not tight'. I woke up this morning with more soreness. Tonight I'm gonna loosen it a bit more but I'm not sure...I usually sleep on my side so I don't think it's pushing down on my nose much.

I see the DME for upgraded pieces. Hopefully they can help some.

Don't loosen it. Find an old T-shirt or cotton knit under wear. Lay you mask on top and draw around the pieces that touch your nose. Cut them out with 1/2 inch to spare. Put them between your skin and the silicon. This may require some maneuvering and a 3rd or 4th hand - a good opportunity to get your wife involved in some night time play!

Sometimes our skin doesn't like to be sealed in with that kind of materials. Most people here use Padacheek's gaskets and strap covers but I know you are in Japan so this might be faster and easier.

At one point I had irritation and the skin even ending up breaking in that spot.

I happened to have some nice fabric-type first aid tape for another injury and just used a small piece of that. After a couple weeks of use--by then the skin had gotten back to normal--I stopped using the tape and haven't had any problems since.

I used a bandaid on the spot until my PAD-A-CHEEK arrived.

Make sure you clean the cushion every day. I am having the same problem myself. First thing is to let the nose heal.I use the nose cushions until its better.

Don't hesitate to try a different mask. I know Resmed makes full face masks with shallow nose areas. These masks are for the reasons you spoke of. Tinker with the bandades and liners to see if one works for you.

Have you tried adjusting the angle of the forehead support? It works for me.

+1 to the folks who recommended the t-shirt or gecko pad ideas. I used the pad for the first two months, it's called something else now, but it's basically just a silicone gel pad that goes over your nose bridge. It keeps everything from getting irritated until your skin gets used to having something resting there all night.

After a couple of months, I found I no longer needed it. I've been using the mask without it for about 3 weeks now, and no break-outs or other issues. I still get a reddish mark in the AM, but it goes away in about 20-40 minutes or so.

Good luck!
