Have you had cataract surgery?

Post by HerbyPeg » Sun Jul 17, 2011 2:19 pm

I'll probably have one eye done in Sep/Oct and I'd like hear from you.

Did you have to change the type of mask you used immediately post-op?

Regards, Peg

Yes, I had cataract surgery on my left eye. But - I had it done BEFORE I started CPAP so I can't answer your question.

Hi Peg (there is also a Pug around here), I underwent one eye cataract surgery before I started CPAPing. IMO, you don't need to change the mask b/c of it, unless the mask or the headgear strap goes over the eye. They seal the cut tightly with sutures.

But show your mask to the eye surgeon.

Given the drops you have to put in your eye for quite some time after the cataract surgery mask leaks in or near the eye would be very risky. All they put over my eye was a "ventilated cup" that I could see thru. I don't remember how long I had to keep that "cup" on, maybe a week. I think I'd be inclined to use a nasal pillows mask.

Yes, I have had both eyes treated (about three weeks apart). And no, I did not change anything about my mask. My doctor issued me a rigid plastic shell eyecover that I wore at night. She was more concerned that I might unthinkingly rub my eyes than regarding mask leakage. Anyway, I did fine and am very grateful for finding such a good doctor.

I had both eyes done past Jan/Feb. I regard this surgery as miracles. I wear glasses for reading only, 20/20 for distance. Anyway used my mask every nite. With nasal pillows I dont blow any air into eyes. It just wasnt a problem! Best of luck on your surgeries, hope they go as well as mine! Dan

Just clean the mask and it should be OK to use for your second surgery. I know from a friend who has had the same procedure at different times, like you. She highly recommends Dr. Alan Carlson, who’s like the top eye surgeon here in North Carolina and a top professor at Duke Eye Center. Just name-dropping in case any others in the thread is looking for a fantastic cataract surgeon.
