Post by doncjr » Sun Feb 05, 2006 7:13 pm

hi...I've been using my cpap only a few night and i've noticed the bridge of my nose is red and sore in the morning. Is this a fit issue or is there something i can cushion the area with? I'm a newbie as you can tell. thank you all.

nose sore

Mins was the same way when I started and was using a ComfortGel mask. It was worse since I had broken my noe on the bridge as a child. It got better after the skin on the bridge toughened up. It hardly bothered me after a few months, but I switched to a swift and avoided all the bridge contact. I initially was cutting up a bandaid and putting it over the bridge and that helped until it could handle the mask. Just keep working with it. Surgical tape worked too but it was too rough on skin. Buy the best surgical tape which releases easy or use bandaids. It will get better!

Maybe your mask is too tight. I try to keep my mask as loose as necessary to keep a good seal. Otherwise, think about the Swift or the Aura.

With that mask you have, there's alot you can try to adjust fit.

If you loosen or tighten the crown strap on your head gear, you can change to angle of the straps accross your face. You might want to try making the straps pull at a more upward angle rather than straight accross the side of your face.

Remember, your chin goes into that mask, the mask doesnt just cover the mouth. Sometimes if your mouth is opening too wide while you sleep, it'll make the mask bare down on the nose more. This can be remedied by getting a good chin strap. IF you use a chin strap, place the strap under your chin and center it so that it rides accross the silicon gasket where it touches the skin of your face. You dont want the strap tight, that would force your mouth shut and leave you with just your nose to breath through.

Just having the strap tight enough to remain in place but loose enough to allow for easy mouth opening will do 2 things.
1. let you use a looser overall headgear strap tension because the chin strap will seal the lower half of the mask to your face better and
2. put enough upward pressure on the mask to relieve pressure on the bridge of your nose.

Hope that helps.

PS. Just to make sure, the chin strap goes on after the flexifit mask. Mask on first, chin strap on the outside.
