Newbie: Mask Recommendation for Stomach Sleeper

Post by snoozalot » Sun Feb 05, 2006 11:42 am

Hi all...
I will be starting cpap in the next week or so, and need to get some equipment. Any mask suggestions for people like me that sleep on their stomach or side?
Thanks!
Bob

I've been happy with my Aura Headrest, by AEIOMed. But what works for me may not work for you. I recommend reading through as many posts as you can tolerate. Take notes about pros and cons of various masks, and try to make your best educated guess. I went through four different masks before I found the one that was perfect for me.

The Aura Headrest lets me (and lots of others) sleep comfortably in almost any position. Most important with the Aura is probably the shape of your nostrils. I think you'll be fine as long as your nostrils are not very long and narrow.

Good luck with your research and therapy. Remember, it may take some time to adjust to wearing something, but try not to give up. It's changed a lot of peoples lives for the better.

I use a nasal mask with APAP and absolutely cannot sleep in any position except on my stomach (elbows up and head on hands, more or less). Now I can't use a pillow under that either, but kept having visions on cutting a hole in the mattress (obviously not feasible!), SO I got a 4" foam 'mattress' slab from a local foam place, which is very comfortable anyway - it's a relatively firm high density one. I then cut out a 3" deep trench from the top of the slab, 4-5" wide and 10" long, right down the middle. I tried it out and it worked! My fingers just hang into the sides of the trench, the hose flips up (instead of down) into the trench towards the top of the bed, and because I use a mask that diffuses air all around from under a raised (by 1/4 cm) little piece on the elbow (ResMed Ultramirage nasal), rather than jetting straight out from it), the air is not blocked by the mattress. It sounds pretty strange, but it does what I want it to.
