Puffing air

Post by terio2 » Tue Jul 05, 2011 7:26 am

I think I now know why large and now continous leaks. While awake couldn't sleep for hours I was puffing air and not by choice. Using Swift LT but I think it happened with the Resmed nasal mask too. Don't know about using the micropore tape, don't want to rip my skin

Two suggestions:

1. If you don't already, try sleeping with your tongue on the roof of your mouth, just behind the front teeth. I thought it would be impossible to learn to stay this way in my sleep, but it wasn't--I practiced a lot during the day for a few days. This seals off the mouth from the rest of the oropharynx, and then your mouth won't fill with air that has to go somewhere.

2. Try a chinstrap--I know it's more lip leaking than jaw dropping, but it might help.

Thanks. Thought the tongue there would block airway. Chins straps hurt jaws or slip on my head. Think my bite changed after chin strap usage not that I used the chin strap that many days in a row. May try it over mouth more than jaw like one posting instead of the tape. Tried bobbie pins for the straps.

Nope, that's the normal resting spot for the tongue-- it keeps the airway open while preventing loss of pressure from CPAP air filling your mouth instead if splinting your airway. Otherwise we could cure apnea by letting our tongues hang out like dogs.
