60# WEIGHT GAIN and CPAP connection HELP
67 Years old with many medical issues that prevent mobility
Adding this here and have more details farther down but ...............is there a connection between poor quality sleep and weight gain?
I lost 45 pounds before I stopped smoking do to illness and 3 bouts of c-diff
I am eating the same foods and same amounts I did before stopping smoking.
I went on Wellbutrin the week before i quit and had only 3 cigs a day while doing this.
was on Wellbutrin for 2 weeks after the quit and went off it
Then i started savella for the fibro pain and tried 3 times to get the dosage up but finally am off it as it can add weight i have since read
Saw the Dr on Tuesday and he said he was more concerned with me rapid weight gain........and to just start smoking again and get the weight off.
now i HAVE NOT done that nor do i plan too
My plan was to have the exercise in place. 2 x's a week exercise class and one day of Tai Chi........... spa once a day to help mobility. Because of the weight gain my mobility is so bad i can't garden and am using 2 canes. Saw a rhumy and she said NOT Fibro......didn't believe in it ..........sent me to neuro but 3 month wait to get in to see that dr.
Recent move from PA to CA has hindered finding dr and esp a chiro. I now found a chiro and have been twice and he seems to be helping and gave me a tens unit to try. It's on now as i'm typing..............so
I've have weight issues all my life........
I know how to lose weight
I know i have to exercise
I know as dr agreed that the nic does help with pain issues and stopping to nic will hinder matabolism
Also new rules in CA so having to start over with new dr to get CPAP
Dr said non restorative sleep will hinter weight loss. Still wake up exausted as masks not fitting and ordering an new biPAP to replace the CPAP
I guess i'm just depressed because it seems at almost 70 I've lost my quality of life. Sure i don't have cancer and feel blessed............. went to ER for shortness of breath and had tons of nuclear heart test and blood wook all is fine.
So, I know this is so long and wish i could make it more condenced but for some of you out there who are having medical and weight issues, i sure could use a friend.
I'm a 'cup full' kind of gal but this is so wearing.
I'm looking into WW and hear they have gluten free plans now

Re: 60# WEIGHT GAIN and CPAP connection HELP
Hi Judy in CA:
A sudden weight gain usually indicates a medical problem. How long did it take to put on the 6o pounds?
I assume that the ER studies of your heart have ruled out the usual culprits of congestive heart failure, etc.
I would suggest that you start keeping a detailed diary of our food intake and any exercise that you do.
You might find that you are eating more than you realize. Snacks, etc. really do add up quickly.
If you do keep a diary, then make sure that everything is included.
One of the things that gets folks into trouble is salad dressings. So, if you are eating salads ( that's really good ), make sure you measure the dressing that goes on using a measuring spoon or some portion control device.
If you are able to use a computer reasonably well, there is a software package, CalorieKing that will do all the tracking for you. It has an enormous data base of food items so its a matter of selecting what you want and selecting the quantity and it keeps track of the rest.
Taking a lot of weight off quickly doesn't change your eating life style so after the weight is gone, the temptation returns to resume the eating habits you had before. Keeping a diary will help you to see what is really happening.
Hope you are able to get a new BiPap Auto machine like the Respironics System One that keeps detailed information for analysis.
Best of luck.

I don't believe you can lose weight through exercise. Exercise makes you healthier and may help you curb your appetite or simply feel enough better to resist temptation.
There is something to the low carb diets. Even if you're not going to go into the full "Atkins" stuff that doctors love to hate, there is some advantage to cutting down on carbs, which tend to give you a quick blood sugar boost, go away quickly, then leave you hungry again sooner.

Re: 60# WEIGHT GAIN and CPAP connection HELP
Any doctor who would suggest a patient go back to smoking to lose weight needs to be left in the dust.... find a new one!
I am using the new Weight Watchers online system and I've lost 25 lbs so far. It is a wonderful way of life....I don't even feel like I am dieting. Check it out...
You don't give us any info on your cpap therapy other than the possibility to moving to a bipap...which usually doesn't happen unless you 'fail' cpap. What have been your issues that might lead to this? Has your therapy been ineffective thus far? What has been going on?
Bottom line is that OSA can bring about weight gain, and looking back to when my extreme fatigue hit me, I started to gain at a rate of 1-2 lbs a week. That stopped once I had gained about 50 lbs. Now I am on cpap 11 months and feel so much better. I started Weight Watchers and have half the gain off with the other half to go. I plan to start exercising soon, but I am still dealing with some residual pain in my right ankle from a bad sprain. Once that subsides, I will begin walking.
You can do this..... preferably with a new doctor in your corner. Best of luck!!

Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

!!
The CPAP worked for 10 years in CA and now just can't seem to get good quality sleep with any mask
tried to get outside and exercise a bit in the garden today and now feel like a nap and it's only 11:00
haven't eaten breakfast
i'm trying to do 6 small meals a day at 1800 callories as dr suggeged.
just tired of being tired.
so
guess the meds for fibro and lack of sleep and not being as active as i was can all add up
hope the new chiro can help mobility and the ten's unit seems to be helping.
thanks for all you help folks even if i didn't answer jsut can't get the 'quotes' thing to work

Re: 60# WEIGHT GAIN and CPAP connection HELP
I am a believer in counting calories. Or, if not calories, using a Weight Watchers type system where you count points. Be religious about keeping track of your calories. There are several online tools to help. I use Livestrong, which allows you to type in a food and it will give you the calories: http://www.livestrong.com/myplate/
As someone else mentioned, exercise is good for you but not all that much help in losing weight. For example, today I rode my bike 20 miles. I likely burned only 500 calories for that long ride. And I am more hungry from the exercise so I likely will eat those extra calories. So, I have to keep close tract of what I am eating.
I also have a scale so I can weigh my food. Most cheese is roughly 100 calories an ounce. Easy to remember that but not so easy to guess how big an ounce is. So, until I got familiar with portion sizes I weighed just above everything.
Good luck with your xPAP treatment and weight loss.

Judy: I would hope your doctor has checked your thyroid. A thyroid out-of-wack can cause weight loss/gain and mess with your energy level.

Re: 60# WEIGHT GAIN and CPAP connection HELP
Thanks for all the help folks
Lots of good suggestions
I found a site someone recommened on calorie counting and doing it daily
Also think the Bipap is working better and first day in 2 months i haven't had to take a morning 'lay dowy'
I'm still really depressed and off the anti d med as making me so sleepy and the 104 temps were having in CA isn't helping.
Thanks for allowing me to come here and share my personal baggage with you guys.
I really think stopping smoking, doing the mal functioning cpap and taking meds that weren't helping and making everything including adding weight ...............had just taken it's tole.
It's the 4th of july.........independence day and ................wish i felt more 'independent'
love to hear from a few of you today if your not out party'n

Re: 60# WEIGHT GAIN and CPAP connection HELP
There are several 'low carb" threads on this forum that you can do a forum search for.
Google Gary taubes and listen to a 1 hour presentation on youtube.
I gained 20 lbs as soon as I quit, before apap. But during that time I also increased my "healthy whole grain" carbs. So what's to blame.
Drop the grains, sugars & starches. Eat more protein, fat and vegetables.
Many here have seen an amazing difference.
