CPAP when you get old

Post by sleeplessinthevalley » Mon Jul 04, 2011 11:32 am

OK, here comes another question. So far I am very pleased with the use of my CPAP. But what happens when you get old. I am only 63 and have many years before I have to worry about it, but is there an age when you are too old to use the machine? My Mom at 90 and with dementia could not cope with all of the steps of using and maintaining the equipment. How old are all of you? Do you know of anyone who needed to stop the use of CPAP/ Thanks!

You will never be too old to use your machine. If you are in a home or facility for the aged, the staff will help. Its just like needing an insulin shot or medications, you would still need them would you not.
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Yes, if you develop dementia you may not be able to use CPAP. It does take a little brains to keep the mask on all night and avoid major leaks. My Dad has a friend, an M.D. no less, whose dementia has gotten to the point he can/will no longer use CPAP.

This guy is a pleasant guy to talk to and goes on vacation with his wife and tends a small garden. When you talk to him you notice his memory is bad. He struggles for words and I sometimes fill in the words for him. My point is he is not totally looney but has enough dementia that he cannot manage his CPAP.

His wife is a nurse but cannot get him to use CPAP.

You can't put an age on it. Some have early onset dementia in their 40s. Others are sharp until they are 100 and then develop dementia. I know one case like this - 102 years old - was mentally sharp until about a year ago, but now has dementia and emotional pain along with it. Surely God needs to take her???

Dementia is a sh***y condition. Pray that I die suddenly of a massive heart attack.

You're still a young gal! Chances are you could use your cpap machine for a long time to come.
Personally, I don't worry about what the future holds, I got my application in for that that better place that awaits me someday, where I'll never need this dang machine again!

When you have dementia you live for the moment or for the past. The future is nothing. I don't care if I don't use a CPAP if I suffer severe dementia.
