Swift FX XS nasal pillows....whistling?!

Post by FizzyWater » Sat Jul 02, 2011 3:38 pm

I have a Swift FX and it seems like the extra-small nasal pillows fit better than the small, although I can switch between them. However, the extra-small pillow "whistles" when I try to use it and it drives me crazy! Has anyone else noticed that? Is there a way to fix it (boiling or something?)

Thanks!

Personally, I notice whistling when the pillow size I use is not the correct size for me and I don't get a solid "seal" around my nostrils, so the air escapes in tiny gaps and starts to whistle. I switched between M and S to test them out and I believe it's that lack of a seal in the S size that creates the whistling effect for me. It's possible that, though you may feel more comfortable with the extra small size, the small size may be better suited for you.

I just want to double check that the nasal pillows are on the outside AGAINST your nose, not in them--right????

The pillows are double-walled. If one of the inner walls gets inverted, it can cause a whistle. Another cause of whistling pillows is a speck of dust or tiny drop of water in the exhaust port. A good wash/rinse or wipe clears that problem. I've noticed that my pillows whistle more when it's time to replace.

So far I've had great success with boiling. I've got one set I just boiled today for the third time. It's amazing how they're mushy before you start and come out of the pot feeling brand new. Although boiling the pot dry was not part of the plan , it didn't seem to hurt the pillows. I figured they'd be a melted mess, but they were totally fine.

I'm trying the same mask right now also, and am having the same EXACT problem. I tried the small first and they whistled like crazy. I then tried the xs but kept fighting with the hose and some other issues so i went back to the small thinking that was the problem, but the whistling irritate the mess out of me. I'm going to go back to the xs tonight and see if they work better now that i've slept with the whole set up for a few nights and see if that size works better. I still fight the exhalation vent and the hose. For some reason the vent is loud and the hose ends up underneath my head all the time. If i'm still fighting it after monday, I'm trading masks again! Should it really be this hard??!!

Hi--I could never get the Swift FX mask to work for me--it leaked and whistled no matter what size nasal pillow I used so I went back to my Swift LT for her--it is the best one going for now that I have found. I was really hoping that the FX would work out for me--I love the design of it and the straps are very comfortable. I hated the leaks I got when I slept on my sides.

I had a few issues up front with the hose moving the pillow so it leaked. But I replaced my pillow (i.e. bedding, not CPAP) with a firmer one, and the Swift stayed in place because I wasn't sinking in as much. Then last night, I came to the realization that I felt restricted breathing through the medium size, and bumped up to the large. It never budged. Stayed put all night.

Neither of them whistled, though, except when the first one leaked.

Not sure if that helps at all, but that's my experience.

Hello Dreamlady, are you really boiling the nasal pillows? Don't they melt? How do you do it? What is the effect, do they last longer??

I'm pretty certain the masks are silicone. It's got quite a high tolerance for temperature compared to rubbers and plastics (hence silicone pot holders for cooking).

Right, thanks for that. I'll try it with an old one then and see what happens.

I was experiencing the same thing with XS pillows. Dealt with the whistling for months. Tried a size S on a whim, and ta-da! No more whistling! I've been using S ever since, and everything (from whistling to leaks) works much better!
