ResMed S8 suddenly rebooting after the data-card is inserted

Post by McSleepy » Thu Jun 30, 2011 8:02 am

This morning, shortly after waking up, I went to download the data from my ResMed S8 VPAP Auto 25 machine, as usual. I hadn't done it in about a week but nothing was different than before. Except, as soon as I inserted the card and the display said "CARD INSERTED please wait", the machine suddenly rebooted. First, the display went dark, then the "WELCOME >>>>>" and the rest of the screens followed. It did that several times, even after me power-cycling the machine. Then, after I started writing this, I went back and tried again and... it worked this time. Has anyone seen this before? The machine is still under rental, I don't know what the DME would think of this (he knows I'm reading my data, but he's not fond of it, at all). The only thing I can think of is that the card might be getting full. No data was missing (except a few small gaps from the day before; I'm not sure that I haven't seen this before, though). Is it necessary to clear out the data on it periodically? I wouldn't think the machine should reboot for that or any reason, but who knows. Any thoughts?

Call your DME and suggest that a new card might be worth a try.

Are you certain that the 2 pin mains power cable was firmly plugged into the back of the S8?

If it wasn't in tight, the simple act of inserting the card may have disturbed the mains power connection enough to momentarily interrupt the mains power supply to the machine, which could well cause the symptoms you described

BTW, the ResScan card can never "fill up"...... the capacity of the card is higher than the capacity of the biggest total data set the S8 could ever write to it.

Cheers,

Bill

Yup, yup. I've had that happen w/my S8 VPAP Auto (the January 2008 release, NOT the VPAP Auto 25 [July 200 release]). ONE TIME I got an Error 101 (similar number, Resmed says that isn't a complete error code number). Despite its no longer being under warranty I took it in to my provider for maintenance and to check what they called a "software" problem. It didn't cost me anything for repair, Medicare or my secondary must have paid the repair that Resmed said would be $55. I haven't had any problems since.

And, by the way, I have 3 different cards and had a problem w/its happening w/all three over a couple of months period before taking it in to my provider.

I've got the same problem too.
Sometimes it works the first time I insert the card, other times I have to re-insert it half a dozen times before it works. It's a giant PITA and I should send it in to my DME to fix, but I don't want to be without it for the weeks it would take them to get it fixed.

They should supply you w/a loaner CPAP whilst yours is being repaired. My DME provider did. They insisted I give them both PAP and humidifier and they provided both PAP and humidifier loaners. I think they billed Medicare and/or my secondary rent for the loaner but can't say for sure since I was never billed or asked for a copay.

My repair statement from my provider stated:
Acoustic Foam bottom case 1
Motor 1
Labor on non-oxygen equipment 3

and did not include any charges. My ONLY cost was a $35 fee when they originally picked up my S8 VPAP Auto.

Thanks, everyone. I wanted to try again today and see what would happen. Funny thing, the first time I inserted the card today it said "Card error, please reinsert the card" and I did, and it worked fine. I will monitor this and I'll try other cards (I have a couple of spares), if it ever happens again. If it does and it's not the card, I'll take it to the DME. The machine is on rental for another 7 months, so I'm not running out of warranty anytime soon.
