Does anyone else have a hard time yawning with the mask on?

Post by dusty0318 » Sun Jun 19, 2011 4:52 pm

It's like the air gives a little suction and a stutter when I yawn. Unusual or not?

I find it darn near impossible to yawn with the mask on.

And it's not because of mask related "suctions and stutters"---whenever I try to yawn I get a mouth full of air that's most uncomfortable. Indeed, I find it almost impossible to open my mouth with the mask on for ANY reason at all when I'm awake. That's part of why I find the mask so utterly isolating even while lying right next to my dear hubby. Not being able to talk at all without getting a belly full of air is very, very frustrating to me. *sigh*

It's probably going to be tough to yawn with a full face mask.

With a nasal mask, I quickly developed the ability to close my nose off internally. I can drink, open the mouth, or breathe through the mouth with the CPAP going.

I can talk, but I sound like my nose is stopped up or I'm holding my nose closed with my fingers.

I'm not quite sure how to describe how to do it. I sort of push up with the top of my mouth and close off the nose. Sometimes it helps to push up with my tongue, but once I'm closed, I can relax my tongue.

Robysue, maybe you should try putting on the mask, opening your mouth and seeing if you can develop the technique of closing your nose off. It's a bit like holding your breath and squeezing your lungs to puff out your cheeks. Or pursing your lips and blowing out candles. Or sucking on a soda straw. When you do any of those actions, you are closing off your nose internally. You just have to learn to do the same reflex against the force of the CPAP.

Yawns don't bother me near as much as having to cough with a FFM
It feels like my head is going to explode!

I can yawn easily enough (my pressure range is 11 - 13 cm), but I worry about getting an unjustified central on my log.

Um, no thanks.
Taping is for those who like to live on the edge, you know?
like the guys who like to ride a motorcycle without a helmet on.

I try doing a deep inhale instead of a yawn (I have a nasal mask and opening my mouth just blasts air out). Sometimes it works other times I just cannot get that feeling I reached the limit. So, I breath a little faster for a minute or so and then try again. Once I get that feeling of a full deep inhale, I'm good.

When I yawn while wearing my nasal mask, air doesn't escape from my mouth, but my ears get stuffed up as if I was changing altitudes in a plane. If, and it is a big if, I can exhale through my mouth at the exact right time at the end of the yawn, my ears are not affected.

Oh man...I used my cpap for the first time last night and it was impossible to yawn! I couldn't believe that something so simple could be so difficult. And then, of course, the more I realized that I wouldn't be able to yawn, the more my body wanted to...RIGHT THAT INSTANT! I ended up just having to do a really really big inhale. Seemed to work ok...until the next time that is.

I yawn and sneeze inside the mask. The last time I sneezed inside the mask it blew off the none rebreathing valve. But I fixed it with a set of tweezers, the next day. I keep spares for changing during the nights.
