Thanks, O.! It's so good to still get support from all my friends on here. Thank God I'm not diabetic; not even borderline. All of my immediate family is/was diabetic, so I'm keeping a close eye on that.

I'm hoping to get my results today. The suspense IS terrible, bailachel!

Sorry to hear about your dad's lung cancer.

"saw dust at the sawmill" should not be blamed too much b/c they have efficient saw dust removal, these days

BTW, American Woodworkers who made furniture before the tablesaw was invented were known to live to [very] old age.

As to OSA and diabetic, very much so. Google: sleep apnea and diabetes

p.s.See here a copy of a post which I have posted recently in a woodworkers chatroom:

Possible attributes for the extra longevity of cabinet makers (and woodworkers):

1) Work in small groups and thus are limiting infection spread
2) No smoking or drinking since smoking involves fire and drinking don’t go with handling sharp tools
3) Use their brains and thus postpone dementia
4) Stay fit. Preventing obesity is the number one cause of future death. From a recent New England Journal of Medicine issue:

“ If past obesity trends continue unchecked, the negative effects on the health of the U.S. population will increasingly outweigh the positive effects gained from declining smoking rates. Failure to address continued increases in obesity could result in an erosion of the pattern of steady gains in health observed since early in the 20th century. “

5) Old time cabinet makers used hand tools only vs. machines at present time which create sawdust.

About sawdust, see this from OSHA:

http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/etools/woodwor ... ddust.html

Health Hazards > Wood Dust - Carcinogens

“Exposure to wood dust has long been associated with a variety of adverse health effects, including dermatitis, allergic respiratory effects, mucosal and nonallergic respiratory effects, and cancer. Contact with the irritant compounds in wood sap can cause dermatitis and other allergic reactions. The respiratory effects of wood dust exposure include asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis,
and chronic bronchitis”.

6) The American Cancer Society has come out with this report recently:

"Article

Cancer mortality among woodworkers

By Steven D. Stellman, PhD *, Lawrence Garfinkel, MA, American Cancer Society, New York

Abstract

The mortality experience of 10,322 men employed in woodworking industries was compared with that of 406,798 nonwoodworkers. All subjects were enrolled in an American Cancer Society study and followed prospectively from 1959 through 1972. Age-adjusted rates of death from all causes and from all cancers were not higher in the woodworker group, but excess rates were observed for cancers of the lung, stomach, and bladder, as well as nonmelanoma skin cancer and possibly leukemia. Woodworkers experienced significantly decreased rates of colon-rectum cancer and coronary heart disease. The elevated cancer rates could not be explained by cigarette smoking habits. If anything, there is evidence to suggest a possible interaction between employment in woodworking trades and heavy cigarette smoking, in increasing the risk of lung and bladder cancer."

*******************************
It's interesting to note that heart problems (which are currently the major causes of death in the U.S.) are low within woodworkers. So, if we just keep the sawdust under control then we, woodworkers, have good chances to live longer lives than the average person. Or, if you'r not a woodworker then become one.
