I don't use the Kindle for web browsing very often, but it's come in handy at times. If I had an iPad or a similar device, I'd certainly use that instead! But the Kindle and my desktop computer are the only choices I have right now. And it's difficult to bring the desktop computer with me if I want to internet-surf in bed or elsewhere around the house.

UPDATE: Just talked to my son. He WAS describing a "jailbreak". His is a "Nook", not a "Kindle", but the hacks are around for both. (I'm still gonna play with it on Monday!!!)

Neither is illegal, but will void the warranty.
