computer UPS for cpap machine?

Post by pitrow » Mon Aug 17, 2009 5:17 pm

I was just searching through posts for something unrelated and came across a post that made me ponder.

It was talking about power spikes from thunderstorms causing the machine to reset, but not shut off. Anyway it made me think about this coming winter. It's not very often here that I go an entire winter without losing power at least once. I dread it happening while I'm using my cpap and waking up suffocating again.

So I was wondering are the computer UPS (uninterpretable power supplies) adequate for a cpap machine? I doubt the one I have is a pure-sine-wave output, and I know the battery in it wouldn't last very long, but I'm thinking it would be just enough for the alarm on the UPS to wake me up without the machine instantly shutting down and me waking up suffocating.

Thoughts?

A computer type UPS is fine for powering a CPAP machine, although the battery won't last very long, it would be fine for power hits and short outages.

Heated humidifiers are a different matter because they draw LOTS of power and will greatly shorten the length of time that the UPS will provide power, also certain ResMed humidifiers are problematic when used with inverters. At least one ResMed humidifier is not supposed to be used with any sort of inverter.

Some UPSs allow you to shut the power off alarm so that you can sleep through short outages.

Try http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E6LEI2. It powered mine all night, humidifier too. No beeps other than when it takes over power and when power is restored.

Best value is to get yourself an Optima Blue Top battery and a trickle charger. You can use your CPAP (w/ HH in passover mode) for about a week in a major power failure like hurricane strike ... so depending on where you live and what kind of power outages you get.

I'm on a standard marine deep cycle battery that gets a trickle charge about once a month just to be sure it's topped off (Auto charger won't charge it if it doesn't need it!!)
I don't care if the humidifier doesn't work for a bit, so I just have a cigarette lighter connection to the battery that run to a 12V cable that plugs into the machine if power disappears -- and around here it goes for a week at a time!!! (I also have a generator that I use to charge the battery when necessary).
My computer UPS is very annoying when the power goes out. It just tells me I need to gracefully power them all down to get rid of that infernal beeping.......
Your solution will depend on frequency of outages and length.
Good luck
cheers

Looks like a spammer to me. The link in his signature goes to a site selling cpap supplies.
