Should I switch off Resmed Adapt SV daily?

Post by sleepgem » Tue May 17, 2011 3:04 pm

Hi,

I've heard that if you have humidifier attached to ResMed Adapt SV (I suppose other sleep appliance too), you suppose to keep Adapt SV plugged in and switch it on ALL the time. I think this is to keep air circulation going and to avoid moister seeping into Adapt SV unit which might potentially damage the motor). That is just my understanding.

Questions:

+ If you're using Resmed Adapt SV, do you switch off the unit (w/ humidifier attached) everyday in the morning or leave it on?

+ I prefer not to leave it ON 7x24 as it adds up to electricity cost (fan is ON all the time). I just detach the humidifier from the main unit every morning. Is this safe to do as the main vent whole is now open and has risk of getting dusty over the time?

Certainly, other option is to empty humidifier chamber daily which is not very convenient on this unit and I don't do it.

This is costly unit ($4K-$5K) and I'd like to take proper care of it and at the same time not waste electricity, etc.

Thanks.

If you don't use the humidifier daily, then I recommend you turn it off daily. If you use the humidifier, you might want to keep it on, since it helps waft the humid air away from the motor.

I did not turn it off, and now regret it. The motor on my unit has started to make a whining sound. Time for a new one with only two years of use. Not the quality I would want. I am grateful I purchased a backup unit.

Leave it on if you use the humidifier every day.

Yes. That's a great compromise.

Agreed. Your approach is great.

I doubt the cost of electricity is all that much. But the cost for an early replacement (along with the frustration involved in that) is MUCH higher.

As always, these are just my opinions, based on my own experience.

As always, great advise and prompt response, JohnBFisher. Thanks.

Yes, I use humidifier everyday. I wish there was a cap/cover available for the vent opening of Adapt SV main unit so when I detach humidifier and switch the main unit off, I can prevent dust, etc. particles going inside the main unit from the vent opening. I wonder if running it ON all the time decreases motor efficiency or kills of fan altogether over the period of time. Wish I could afford 2nd unit as backup. I believe insurance won't replace even first unit until it's 4-5 years old. I am new in this game dealing w/ them.

I used to have one of these. I was never told to leave it on 24/7. I know the water chamber is hard to remove and to clean, I just topped off the water as I used it.
I'd drop ResMed an email- they were helpful through email when I was trying to understand mine.

hmm, I just called ResMed (+1 (858) 836-5000) and the tech support stated that I don't need to leave the main unit ON all the time.

However, I do recall calling ResMed some months ago asking the same question and vaguely remember being told by tech support to keep it ON all the time.

As w/ many other tech supports, you often get varied answers for the same question from different technicians. Hence, I thought I'd check with folks here. Looks like not many people use Adapt SV here based on the replies.

Well, more DMEs provide Respironics than Resmed units. The ASV units are pretty rare as it is. So, the total number of people using the Resmed ASV units will be smaller. And those who feel they should respond is fewer still.

However, I tend to agree with the tech support. If you have humidity buildup in your unit during the day, then you can certainly turn on your unit. But that should be pretty rare. I would expect turning the unit off during the day would be fine.
