ConFUSEion

Post by slojuggler » Sun May 15, 2011 4:31 pm

I recently purchased the Respironics Shielded Cord, the cigarette lighter adapter for my CPAP machine. However, the instructions enclosed are misleading as to whether I should use the 3, 5 or 7 amp fuse.

I called the Respironics 800 number, but they were so busy, I had to leave a message. They called me back saying to call them back, rather than leaving a simple answer of 3, 5, or 7.

Grr.

Does anyone know which fuse I should use for the REMstar Plus with C-Flex and the humidifier?

I finally found some official Respironics manuals online.

Unfortunately, it's not really clear. Both the blower unit and the humidifier spec a max current of 5 amps at 12V. It's not 100% clear, but I THINK it's 5 amps total for the pair.

Most devices use less current than what they spec, so I'd say, use the 5A fuse. If it blows, use the 7A. There's a 7 Amp fuse inside the blower unit itself.

If you use the humidifier you should use the five amp, without the humidifier use the three amp, as long as your pressures are not over 15 other wise go to the next highest fuse.

Thank goodness..it's not just me. Yeah, it's not really clear at all. I even had a tech friend look at it and he was scratching his head about why they made it so confusing.

Curious, what if you're without the humidifier and use the 5 amp? Does it just not work?

It will work. Nothing bad will happen. In general, you want to use the smallest fuse that doesn't blow when there is an electrical problem. In the event something like a short goes wrong with your machine or the power cord, you may get less damage with a 3 amp fuse than you will with a 5 amp fuse.
