New to Cpap
New to Cpap
I have recently been diagnosed with severe osa. I have been using my machine for 7 days and every morning I always wake up with my mask on the floor. Met with my the sleep doc today and have a new mask. I am hoping this will help.It is really frustrating. Has this happened to anyone else? How can i solve this problem?

Tape your mask on to your face. If you pull it off during the night you will feel it.

Welcome to the forum TheStig.
Many of us have had this problem in the beginning. Some find the tape will cause just enough discomfort to remind you to leave the mask on. You can also try using the mask(with the machine on) during the day. Watch tv, read, or listen to the radio to keep your mind off the mask and machine. This should help your body adjust to the feeling of the mask and machine more quickly.

A tape that I would recommend is Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape. You can find it at Walgreens. I use it for taping my mouth shut each night. It holds well and does not cause a skin rash. Also, I want to encourage you that as you keep using the machine, you will get used to it. I've been on one since February and sometimes I wake up and don't realize it is even on. There are a number of things that you will need to work on to get the best results. Number one is getting a mask that works for you. Your DME should have a return policy good for the first month or so. Check into that. Other things include: preparing for bed, conditions of your sleep room (dark, clean, comfortable), a good pillow that will work with your mask/headgear, etc. Tackle one at a time and you'll get there quickly. Keep visiting the forum and learn as much as you can. Ask lots of questions. We all learn from each other. Welcome to the forum!

Always remember that you have not slept with something touching your face all night long, and so your brain sees the mask as "other" and will try to remove it. Also remember that you DO have things touching you all night long - your PJ's (if you wear them) the sheets, the mattress, etc. So, in time, your brain will recognize the mask as "normal" and allow it to stay in place.
The methods already suggested are great ways to help. Tape it down (gently) so it's harder to remove - this helps keep it on and desensitizes you to the mask.
Wear it without the hose for a few minutes at a shot during normal activities (washing dishes, watching TV, etc.) and your brain will begin to see it as "cleared for use."
Yes, sometimes different masks can also assist. Good luck and hang in there!
