Hello All From The New Guy!

Post by The Don » Tue Jan 25, 2005 5:16 am

I was sitting here after waking up at 400am CST and thought there has to be some info on the net and Presto, here I am...I have sat and read alot of your Q & A's this morning and have learned more from you folks than my doctor could have ever told me...A little about myself..I am 43, Married, a 3 1/2 year old son, and a 5 month old Lab pup...I don't know which of those two are more work. I live in Illinois, USA. I was diagnosed a little over a year ago. After the first couple of months I stopped using my machine. I have to wear the whole face thing since I enjoy whistling the theme from Andy Griffith Show in my sleep..Well at least this is the info my wife tells me. Within the past two months I have lost longtime friends to heart failure. Both passed in their sleep and both had sleep apnea. The last one had his Cpap machine on the nightstand and not using it...I haven't missed a night or even that wonderful afternoon nap without strapping my (as my son likes to call it) Buzz Lightyear Space Gear on. Well I have used up enough of your time...I will be registering with this site today. Looking forward to learning more about all of you.
I did have one question. Has anyone been on a Cruise Line and taken their Cpap machine and if so was it a hassle at security? I am leaving next week. Woo Hoo.
Thanks for all your time,

Don

Hi Don, you're so right about finding more practical information about this crazy kind of treatment than most doctors or DMEs (Durable Medical Equipment providers) can or will give you.

People take their cpap machines as carry-on through airline security checkpoints with no hassle. Shouldn't be any problem with cruise ship security either. They're probably just as used to seeing them as the airline people are. For reassurance, you could just ask about it ahead of time with your travel agent or the cruise line office.

You're sure going to enjoy that cruise a lot more now, since those better nights of sleep will probably give you the energy to enjoy it. Have fun!

Greetings Don! So sorry for the loss of your friends. My stupidity nearly stamped my ticket as well. Enjoy your cruise!

Hey Don,

Sorry about the loss of your friends; I lost my best friend last month to other causes.

The machine shouldn't be a problem getting on the ship, my father takes his machine everywhere without hassle. When the question is asked he says it a CPAP machine and they usually wave him through after looking at the machine. I am thinking of rigging my bag with a sort of "jack-in-the-box" for the boys in security, but I don't think they'd find it funny. And I'm liable to receive a body cavity search when they get even. Oh well, enjoy the cruise and the healthier life you're about to enjoy (at least until your boy hits his teens). Just remember to keep using the machine!

I just recently went on a plane during Xmas with my Cpap as a carryon. It was suggested that I have a copy of the prescription inside the case and a receipt from the DME company I rent it from. I did that, and didn't have any problems with security.

I would think they've seen enough of the machines that just the logo on the front of the bag is enough to carry it through security. But I leave the copy in the bag just for travel purposes anyway.

Glad to hear you're back on the machine. I've wondered myself ... what if I had not been sent to the Pulmonologist (for other reasons). How long have I HAD Apnea??? How much stress have I put on my heart over the past years???? It does make one wonder...doesn't it?

The Dr. didn't mince any words when he first met me.... "Boy do you need a good night's sleep!" I wasn't even there for anything LIKE Apnea. I guess it was just meant to be. My tests showed (among other things) that I stopped breathing 68 times in 60 minutes. I'm single and wouldn't have known if I hadn't been tested (except my grandkids who kidded me about snoring!!) I just never realized the symptoms of Sleep Apnea until now. After reading this forum, I've learned so much more too!
