Oxygen & Cpap questions from a n00b!

Post by Sharppointy1 » Tue Apr 19, 2011 5:06 pm

First of all I'd like to say thank you so much to all of you for being the friendliest and most informative cpap site I've found. I've been lurking here since I flunked an in home oximetry test in January and began my life as an oxygen addicted cpap user.
I began using oxygen to sleep in Jan 3, and when my S9 Autoset arrived 2/19, I added cpap to the mix. My AHI in 1st sleep study was only 13.6, but the sleep doc called it "moderately severe OSA". Took me awhile to learn mod severe was because i spent so much time with the oxygen saturation of a rock.
My questions mostly focus on oxygen and cpap. My #1 question is where do most of you have the oxygen tubing hooked into your cpap? Currently my DME has a little port with a one way valve that connects the 02 at the outlet port of the humidifier of my S9 autoset. Then the slimline tubing hooks to the port. Problem with this hookup is I can't get heted air and I only get passover humidification.
Next hubby rigged up a cut off extension oxygen tubing to one of the small ports on the bottom side of the Mirage Quattro mask. This is where the curved silicone plug sits.. The way it's set up it looks like this would be the place to hook in O2 right to the mask. I am able to use the heated hose with this setup, BUT, the tube slips off the port very easy and interrupts my sleep.
We're wondering how have YOU fixed the oxygen + cpap dilemma?
I'm also curious how many others are dually afflicted with the need for oxygen despite CPAP. I'm overweight but not morbidly so - 184 on a 5'4" frame. I have never smoked. I'm annoyed that hubby who smoked a lot over 30+ years doesn't need oxygen, and I the non smoker do. So far when I ask WHY do I need O2 I get the don't ask just use it responses.
Thanks for reading my novel as my introductory post!

Hmmm. I use an S8 Resmed w/2L of 02 bled in w/an "adapter" and standard hose that sounds much like what you are describing and I get heated humidfication with it.

The "adapter" slips onto the humidifier connection for the hose, the 02 tubing fits onto the "nipple" on the "adapter, and the mask hose fits onto the other end of the "adapter" so the 02 is just "joining" the humidifier air.

Maybe you just need to turn your humidifier higher. I absolutely can NOT tolerate "passover" humidity.

With the S9 you should be able to use the same adapter that your DME gave you but but it backwards in between the end of the hose and the mask. The mask will slide into the adaptor and the adapter will fit into the tubing. That should work and give you the best of both worlds.

Let me know if you need help with that.

In additon to the adapter pictured by Lars, there is another that fits the same way except it is a clear blue plastic and the nipple doesn't make a right angle like Lars' milky white adapter and the nipple is smooth and thus somewhat more prone (altho not a huge problem) to the 02 tubing slipping off the nipple. Lars' milky white adapter's nipple also is "grooved" at the end the 02 tubing fits on which makes for a more secure attachment of tubing to nipple.

Read the warnings in the ClimateLine heating tubing booklet. Oxygen should NOT be used with ResMed's heated tubing.
