Full Face Mask Question

Post by WantSomeSleep » Thu Apr 14, 2011 4:58 pm

Is it normal if I wake up and my mouth is open and my cheeks are puffed out? Also when this happens my mouth will be extremely dry. If I increase the humidity will this help with the dryness> Any advice is appreciated.

Since you haven't bothered to list your equipment, I'm going to guess that you're using a nasal mask.
In any case, a dry mouth is an indication of mouth-leaking or mouth-breathing. Increasing humidity can actually have the OPPOSITE effect of what you're seeking. Warm, humid air can actually increase nasal congestion and cause more mouth breathing/leaking. If your nasal passages are congested, do nasal cleansing before bedtime, turn your humidifier setting DOWN or OFF and try cool humidification (aka "passover").

To Clarify I am using a Quattro Full Face Mask. I also just added my equipment to my profile.

OK. I had a "DUH" moment when I finished and looked back at the title of your thread.
Regarding your equipment, does your machine actually look like the one you have in your profile? If not, you might need to re-check the list.

Like I said, dry mouth is an indicator that a person is mouth-breathing (even with a full face mask) and too much humidity can actually make it worse. Try training your tongue to stick to the roof of your mouth and hopefully the back of your tongue will seal the back of your throat......which is probably what's causing the puffy cheeks. Try putting the tip of your tongue to the back of your upper teeth and holding the rest of your tongue to the roof of your mouth. You can additionally pretend you're sucking on a lemon drop (or something) to keep it in place till it becomes second nature.

I stand by my comments about increasing or higher humidity settings under normal situations. Sometimes, when a person has a cold, mouth-breathing in the full face mask is about the best one can do.......in addition to nasal cleansing.

Even in a FF mask, mouth breathing is not ideal. A slack jaw can break the seal and cause the mask to leak. When you practice sleeping with the tongue on the roof of your mouth, try to keep your mouth closed, too. Some people have to still use a chin strap, even in a FF mask.

Take a look at your leak data and see if leaks are an issue. IF you're not sure how, ask, and someone familliar with your machine can help.
