Software for APAP's covered by insurance, or not??

Post by snoozie_suzy » Wed Jan 11, 2006 9:05 pm

Obviously, everyone on this message boards situation is different, some people pay out of pocket for their machines and accessories, others get some coverage after deductibles, and then there are probably others who have great coverage and get everything covered.

Just a general question for people who have gone the insurance route to get their APAPs. Did insurance also cover the software, or is that considered luxury?

Like anything about not sleeping and walking through life like a zombie, should be considered luxury.

I bought my APAP and SW from cpap.com and submitted the bill to my insurance co for reimbursement. There were 3 line items:

APAP (Respironics Cflex)
SW and Card reader
Shipping

I was reimbursed for all 3 items.

It is VERY rare to get software covered.

Over 6 years ago the insurance company I was with covered the APAP, software, heated humidifer with permanent chamber, and 3 different mask when I was getting started.

Today, the insurance company I am with would not cover it (in fact - they don't even cover FF mask and my local DME has refuses to order mask for me because all the insurance company pays is the "cost" of a nasal mask.

They also would not cover a replacement humidifier or machine after my originals died (both at about 4 years old).

Heck, I'm still trying to figure out what they cover in my case past initial sleep study and setup with equipment.

Thus, at this point - I buy stuff with my own $.

Suzy,

The best way to find out is to contact your insurance company and talk to the medical approval section. If you get the typical customer service operator you may not get the right answer. I've called my insurance on an issue a couple of times and get two different answers.

Good luck,

Melinda
