I just washed my mask and I can't do a THING with it!

Post by Janknitz » Fri Apr 01, 2011 1:19 pm

What gives????

I washed my Quattro (cushion) on Wednesday night and put it all back together. I've checked to make sure that everything is snapped together correctly 10 times at least, but the mask is leaking at the top of my nose like a son of a gun. I cannot get it to seal, even with my Padacheeks liner and the antileak strap. I tried two nights. Ugh!

I cannot imagine what the problem is--I didn't change the headgear settings or anything until I tried that late last night out of frustration with NO luck.

I gave up around 1 a.m. and went to sleep with the Micro. I think I would like that mask better with a liner, but my "Padacheek budget" for the quarter is shot, so I'll have to make my own. I don't know why, but I'm still not ready to go back to nasal pillows--my Swift LT and FX masks are crying out of lonliness.

(Not sure if I'm a mask slut or a polycpapist, but I sleep around with a lot of diferent masks ) But lately I've been actually ENJOYING my Quattro and that's what I want to sleep in.

I hate to say this since you already took it apart and put it back together 10 times, but it sounds like something's wrong between the cushion and the frame. You put the green clip back on I'm sure. This is really weird- never had it happen to me.

TSK, TSK........don't take it apart.

Is it leaking where the cushion fits to the frame......or, where the seal fits to your nose?

Did you mess with the forehead support adjustment?

Hi Janknitz,
I'm sorry that you are having problems with your mask. I wanted to share with you the latest thing that has happened to me.
As weird as it may sound,I am now having much better sleep if I don't wash my mask.I have spent the last 14 months washing everything every morning.
Because of my allergies I thought I had to do that.
Then about a month ago my husband found out that he had sleep apnea too and was put on c-pap.
Well, I started out washing his mask every morning because that's what I had always done.He said please don't do that,I can't get it to seal when you wash it.
So, since then we just use baby wipes to clean the pillows before going to bed and not only does it work well for him but for me too!
I don't wash them anymore and I am finally sleeping, not fighting with the seal all night long.it has been a godsend for us.
GOD BLESS YOU!

Here is a good discussion about cleaning. Note the comments by plr66. I also find my husband's mask seals better if I just use a wipe every other night and wash it with Dawn every 2wks or so, but I never take it apart.

I'll have to remember that term. I'm the same way. I'm using 3 also. Nasal atm just til I get over the bad nose then I'll be hooking up (maybe not a good use of words *blush*) with my pillows. However, my face loves my Mirage.

Im pretty careful.

I take mine apart about once every 2 weeks, and gently rinse in lukewarm water, and dont let it
sit out too long before re assembly.

Ok so far.

I've always washed my Sleepweaver without taking it apart. However, the RT at my DME told me she had to make a house call to a client who lives some distance away, they took the components completely apart and then couldn't get it back together again! (I was impressed that house calls were an option, though.)

Our DME provides house calls too, they came to set up our machine, blocking my view, with all features turned off and brought several masks to try except the one we requested that was used in the sleep lab. I was fortunate to have found this forum before the equipment was delivered so I was somewhat prepared, much to their dismay.

That coinage sounds entirely too scandalous. I think of Alice's restaurant and the 8x10 glossy pictures with the circles and the arrows and the descriptive paragraph on the back. Well done!

For those who don't disassemble your mask

Post by archangle » Sat Apr 02, 2011 5:40 pm

Get an old mask you have been cleaning without disassembly. One you're about ready to replace anyway.

Disassemble it and examine carefully.

You will probably decide that disassembly is a good thing.

At least that's true with a comfortgel mask. Some other masks without multiple layers and places for crud to hide might be a little different.

Disassembly isn't that difficult once you're done it a few times.

You might decide to clean without disassembly most of the time, but disassemble every x cleanings.

I don't wash my FF mask all that often, but when I do, I'm perfectly capable of field stripping it to it's individual parts and putting it back together just right. It always reminds me of that scene in Private Benjamen when Goldie Hawn's character first realizes she is a competent adult because she can successfully field strip, clean and reassemble her rifle. I like all the little pieces and parts and what they do, but generally I just remove the cushion and wash that.

I would love to use wipes on the cushion, but I'm highly sensitive to scented products and I've yet to find a baby wipe that is both petroleum and fragrance free. I don't want all that aloe and other stuff in baby wipes either--I never know what's going to give my sensitive skin a rash and that would be too public!

Last night I made a little liner for my micro (so cute--it's like a baby Quattro!) and I fiddled with the Quattro. I think I got the leak under control, but I decided to sleep in the micro. The Micro would be a perfect mask, but I don't like it pressing on my upper lip.

I still don't want to use my nasal pillows The sores are all healed and the sinus congestion is gone, but I just don't seem to want to.
