Re: Sleep study HAI = 171

Hi. I will give you a courtesy reply but I am a Newbie and don't know much about things yet. MY HAI was around 86 and is 8.9 since I have been wearing the mask. I am working with my DME and I will be trying some new full face masks that are coming out from ResMed this week. They said that I should be able to get it under 5 with some work (adjustments, leaks etc). I am waiting to get some parts in the mail and then I will try to read the sd myself and interpret it with the help of this forum. I didn't know HAI readings went to 171 so no help there. Good luck though.

Kathy(Padacheek) is a member here and can help you with a mask liner and lots of other comfort accessories. I have read that sometimes weight loss may allow for a lower pressure. I'm sure others will be along shortly to help more than I can. Good luck and keep us posted.

I am now on bipap with pressures of 25/21 along with oxygen from an oxygen concentrator. This seems
severe and I was wondering if anyone has had a similar case? I got to the point where I was so sleep
deprived I was almost manic and would fall asleep during the day at the drop of a hat.
I have lost 14 lbs since using the bipap and am enjoying a full nights sleep. Is it typical to lose weight
like this or is it just water loss? Also, if one loses enough weight and improves, can the pressures be
lowered? I have to tighten down my Mirage Quattro full face mask very tightly to avoid leaks and this
is leaving red indentations on my face. Not painful, but annoying.
Thanks for any replies
Just consider them your Red Badges of Courage. But do keep reading the forum for tips on how to reduce the marks.

Those are high pressures but you seem to be doing well. Congratulations on the weight loss (assuming you were overweight).

You can find lots of research which shows that lack of sleep can lead to weight gain. It then is logical that with proper amounts of sleep one may be able to lose weight more easily.

With significant loss of weight it could be that the pressure requirements would be less. I would not count on it and then if it comes it is a nice bonus for you.

What position(s) do you sleep in? What was your BMI before the weight loss and after the weight loss?

BTW, I don't think anyone suspected a troll.

Only comment I can offer would be to consider Padacheeks liners or make something similar to help with the red marks.

In general what you describe certainly correlates with severe OSA and then some. Rapid weight loss could be water retention but we don't know what your weight was to start with and any other mitigating factors.
A reduction in pressure is possible with significant weight loss but is not guaranteed.

You are feeling much better? Sleeping better? Then I would assume the machine is doing what it is supposed to do.
Otherwise with a history like that, you would be asking different questions. Are you interested in using the software to monitor things?

Although my AHI (119) was not as bad as yours, my oxygen levels were dropping to as low as 58% and until xPAP I too could fall asleep mid sentence sometimes. Looking back now I was experiencing a number of issues due to the oxygen deprivation every night even though at the time I was not aware of all of them. I've been on xPAP now for 83 nights (but who's counting) and have already lost 17 pounds and feel better than I have in years. I have also seen a decrease in my blood pressure and now have enough energy that I have started to exercise somewhat. I was told by my sleep doctor that the severe OSA impacts the body's metabolism and results in weight gain and after the first 3-4 weeks of xPAP treatment this starts to return to normal and weight loss could start. So far this is pretty much what I have experienced.

If I review my data and track my pressure I have found now that some nights I do not use the whole 16-20 pressure range I have my AutoSet to use. This however I think is as much due to me now sleeping more on my side than purely on my back. Without body position information I can't say if the weight loss has contributed to this or not.

I don't have any experience with your mask so can't say much but I do get some marks from my SoftGel however these dissipate over the first hour or so in the morning so I am not that concerned with them.
