Thank you,

With Central it's just like Obstructive in that you stop breathing. But with Central it's diffrent that instead of a Air Way collapse. You just don't breathe.

I have Central and it can be trickyer to treat in that you don't just have to splint a airway open.

As for why I stop breathing. Well I have yet to find someone who can tell me for sure why that happens. It could be because I have asthma. It could be because my warrenty is defective.

But in a nut shell, Problem is the same in CSA as OSA. We just go about getting the end results diffrent. End results being not passing air in and out engouth.

Thank you for your reply. Do you have OSA too? I had a sleep study done and it did not show up a with central sleep apnea, but I do believe, as my wife has said, that she is not sure but once I start to fall asleep it seems that I may not breath at times for about 10 seconds, I have a auto machine set at 5-17, my presure is 10. Just starting out in this.
thanks for your time!

When I was diagnosed I was running about 40+ events a hour. Of that maybe one or two were OSA. I believe a mix of the two is "Complex Sleep Apnea". But I have been told I have idoitpathic Central Sleep Apnea.

When I went through the tiration proccess I failed the Cpap, and I failed the Bi-Paps and had to be brought in for a test on a ASV unit. Which I also failed. (I suck at tests)

Because of my destats and the fact that I did about as well on a Bi-Level as a ASV I was placed on a Bi-Level machine with supplemental Oxygen. (Bi-Level is cheaper, and if the results are the same. Why pay more)

My machine is set at 15/11. Since it is central I have gone without the machine and just used a Nasal Cannula (i.e. Oxygen only, no Bi-Pap). Note I have tested with a Pulse Oximeter, and my Sleep Dr is all for this type of testing because he admits that central's can be hard to track down completly, and it if works. They rather use less equipment if possible.

I have had my wife wake me up because I was snoreing or not breathing while only on a cannula.. (So maybe Osa events) So I try to use the Bi-Level W/Oxygen most of the time.

Hope that rambling answers some of your questions. I have seen a little OSA, but not engouth to have it score any real value in the Lab. That I know of. I am slender build and 35 years old. CSA was diganosed at 33. After probbly a good 3-4 years of sleep depravation.

I still run a AHI of about 4-8 on my machine. AI of 2-3.

Hope that helps.

Note: Let me clarify, I have gone with out the machine on occasion. Maybe a weekend when my nose hurts or I have just had it with the mask. But I normally try to use my Bi-Level most of the time.
Sorry reread my post and thought I should add that.

Thank you,
Central apnea occurs when your airway is open (meaning you're physically able to breathe) but you don't make any effort to breathe. It's a neurological disconnect. But it can be successfully treated.

Hope that helps.
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.

Dx 11/07: AHI 107, central apnea, Cheyne Stokes respiration, moderate-severe O2 desats. (Simple OSA would be too easy. ;))

PR S1 ASV 950, DreamWear mask, F&P 150 humidifier, O2 @ 2L.

My sleep test showed all OSA and had NO centrals at all. I was put on cpap at 7 and my AHI was running around 8-10, all Centrals. No centrals at the sleep study, hmmmm. I now have O2 added and my AHI has been running around 3 now, but only 1 or 2 OSA during the night, rest are still Centrals. I did use a oximeter before they gave me the O2 machine and it registered 211 events. No idea where the Centrals are coming from.
