Mouth Breathing

Post by bkdraft » Thu Mar 24, 2011 5:55 am

Woke myself up numerous times last night from mouth breathing, even started dreaming about it then. Could mouth breathing show up as Centrals? Is taping my mouth the best thing to try? Open for suggestions.

I'm in the same boat. I'm showing centrals, but my sleep doc says I don't have central apnea. I suppose I could be mouth breathing or just grunting while switching positions LOL.

Interested to see what the "Wise Elders" of the forums contribute on this one. As for me, I'm having a hybrid delivered next week so if it is mouth-breathing, that problem will be over soon.

Taping, chinstrap, papcap. Anything to keep mouth shut is worth a try, otherwise Full face mask. Leak management is number one thing to tackle, without leak being under control we have know way of evaluating other data.

Random central events showing on report can usually be explained. Mouthbreathing leak? Who knows? But I rather doubt it. Since centrals are by nature cessation of breathing with airway open. They are probably real centrals but could be caused from common sleep onset centrals to wakening during the night. Machine doesn't know why.

I would be more interested in seeing where the centrals occurred on the report of the night as that might offer a clue.

It is possible for even a person with no diagnosis of sleep apnea to have an occasional central or even obstructive event. It is when we meet certain criteria for these events that we get the diagnosis and have to start worrying about it. Occasional random central event I wouldn't worry about those very much. If a strong pattern and lots of them, yes, then start wondering.

If I ever get the ResScan software working, I will be happy to share info. For now, I don't have anything that can run XP, just Win7 - which ResMed doesn't support

That's odd, I thought for sure that others with Windows 7 have been able to use the software. Or were you one of those with Mac or other OS that might mess with things more? Perhaps if you explain what has been happening some of the members can offer suggestions as many have quite a bit of computer savvy experience.

I did try it on my Windows 7 (32-bit) netbook (which is a Toshiba, native Windows machine) and it installed and recognized the SD card in the SD card reader that the netbook has built in. However, the ResScan continually hangs on the process where data is downloaded, and when I put the card back in the CPAP it had no previous data anymore, so I was hesitant to try that again.

Understood. Wonder if you could copy the data off the SD card to another SD card to play with and keep original intact?
It doesn't have to be a ResMed card to play with. This problem you have might be a good separate topic to get the attention of the computer gurus here. You might need a different copy of ResScan and I think I saw a link to one version older in a thread not too long ago. ResScan 3.12.

i run ResScan 3.12 on windows 7 64 bit without any problems.
I have a ResScan SD card. I always lock it when I put it in the card reader in the computer.
I sometimes tape my mouth even tho I use a FF mask. It just seems to help.

Thanks for all the great info! I'll give it a go with the SD card locked, and try copying it to another SD card first.

Did you select any card reader drivers when you installed Resscan? If so, uninstall and reinstall and do not install any card reader drivers. The built-in drivers in Windows are all you want.

Ok, changed up some things last night. Went backto cpap set at 7 (was apap 7-12), and made sure I slept on side-stomoch instead of back. No mouth breathing problems at all. I spent 95% of the night on my stomoch, AHI was 2.7 and Centrals was 2.1. Night before was AHI 10.1 and centrals at 9.0 Bad news, I left the SD card in the computer so no detailed data
Oh well, best night so far. Also last 3 nights been taking 1000mg of Calcium and 1000mg of Magnesium as suggested in another thread and that has me sleeping better.
