Resmes S7 connector

Post by jeja » Tue Mar 15, 2011 2:46 pm

I have downloaded the software. I know I need a cable to connect computer to the machine. I assume on end of the connector is a USB connector. The other end I am not sure about. There are two connector ports on the S7. Which one do I use and is there a name for the type of connector needed. Tx

That would be a bad assumption. USB connectors were not particularly common when that machine was designed.

Ah, you're showing your age, grasshopper...

That would be an RS-232 serial port. They were once ubiquitous on nearly all computers. A common use was to connect modems, which once upon a time were external devices that used plain telephone wiring to transmit data at slow speed with many errors.

The intention is that you use a "serial cable" with RS-232 connectors on each end. This would, of course, require your computer to have such a port which with modern computers is practically never the case. I no longer own a computer that has one. Someone here recently posted that you might need a "null serial" cable, but I'm just about positive that I used to use a "regular" one with my S7.

You may be able to use an RS-232 to USB converter, since they're both serial devices. These adapters can be tricky, require drivers, and may not be compatible with all OS's. I'm currently trying to connect my S7 to a Windows 7 machine using such a converter and not having any luck at all getting the OS to recognize the adapter.

I haven't even confirmed for myself whether ResScan will read data from an S7 once a connection is established. Back when I did this, I used a program from ResMed called AutoScan.

Its DEFINITELY a null modem (aka crossover) RS-232-C serial cable that is needed with an S7.

Cheers,

Bill

thx for quick response. I don't have that connector on my computer either. Just checked our local on line store. the do have the usb/rs connector for $15. May as well try it out, if I don't get any other responses. Moving up to an S9 when my sleep lab results come in. Been on the S7 about 6 years and time to upgrade ( insurance pays every 5 years)

Thx

As long as you are buying a cable, in addition to the USB serial port cable, get a null modem cable, too. You will need it.

Ok, bought all the cables and hooked them up to the S 7 and computer. USB to serial port had a driver and installed to com 4. Tried top download from S 7 but the computer tells me to connect a flow generator or data card and try again. the next screen shows an empty box for device and thats as far as I can go.

What am i missing?

thx

What did you buy? You bought a USB->serial cable, I presume, and did you also buy a null modem cable? Are you absolutely certain it was null modem and not a straight through serial cable?

That is a process more prone to error than buying a cable in its original packaging and which is labeled "null modem" by the manufacturer. It is unclear why you needed the computer guy to check it, and it leaves open the possibility, at least in my mind, that the cable you bought was not in a sealed package remaining unopened since leaving the manufacturer. In any event, not being there to see with my own eyes what happened, I have no good way of figuring out why this is not working for you. The only things I can suggest is that you vary the order in which things are done. Attach the cables before you bring up ResScan, bring up ResScan and then insert the USB cable, etc.

he just brought out a cable, unpacked, and check polarity. Must have been used as he only charged $2. Going to look for a null modem connector, today. I have a feeling the cable is wrong.
