It was known as Wittmaack–Ekbom syndrome before drug companies promoted it as Restless Leg Syndrome to try to "spread the word", i.e. sell more medication. I'm a medical transcriptionist and knew it as Wittmaack–Ekbom for a long time; you can check Wikipedia if you don't believe me. And yes, Ekbom is a name:

The RLS Foundation is apparently just trying to get away from the stigma the name "Restless Leg" has created, but they are being misleading and disingenuous with the "it has a new name!" bit. I understand why they want to use Ekbom, but it's Wittmaack–Ekbom syndrome, and it is still medically considered a syndrome because of the etiology is still unknown. If there has been a study that definitively proves an etiology for Wittmaack–Ekbom, I can't find it in my usual medical links. The RLS Foundation is not doing Wittmaack-Ekbom sufferers any favors with this; in fact, I would say that it has a huge potential to backfire.
