chronic daily dry mouth?

Post by Doubtful Tom » Sun Mar 06, 2011 10:31 am

According to archive threads I've read, I gather that problems with excessive dry mouth are often related to mouth breathing, and it appears that the problem is usually confined to machine usage -- that is, folks experience during the night and first thing in morning. My problem is that I have been having dry mouth, somtimes sticky, throughout much of the day, no matter how much water I drink. Has anyone experienced similar problem? Could the cpap be causing this all-day dry mouth? What makes things all the more perplexing is that I'm using a chin strap, and near as I can tell, my mouth stays closed all night. My AHI data is excellent -- generally 1.5 and under. My leak data has been fluctuating since I got new mask liner, though, anywhere from 5 to 20, but this dry mouth has been problem for several weeks.

Possible factor: recent blood work indicated I was "pre-diabetic" for Type II diabetes, and dry mouth is considered one symptom of diabetes. Don't know how much that might be contributing.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi Tom,

I would switch to full face mask as Resmed Quattro FX, Respironics Comfort Full, etc .

Boosting the humidifier could help

Certain Rx cause dry mouth

Age causes decrease of lacrimal fluid

That 20 L/min leak reported by the S9 means a pretty substantial leak for at least part of the night. Yep, probably from the mouth despite the chin strap or from the mask itself. If from the mouth it sure could add to the mouth dryness.

Do you have the software to compare the actual leak line in relation to pressure and events? If not, would be a good idea to get it.

Other factors can also affect the mouth being dry. Meds? Drink enough water during the day? Most of us don't.
Lots of things besides mouth breathing. Though I strongly suspect that mouth breathing is a contributing factor.
