POLL -- Which Came First?
POLL -- Which Came First?
I think it would be interesting to find out whether being overweight or having SDB (sleep disordered breathing such as OSA) came first for the people of this group. Please note that this is not scientific and one should not draw general conclusions from the results of this poll. It's just for fun as much as anything else.
I would also ask if losing weight cured your SDB, but I'm betting that most of those people are not here in the forum any more. If you are, feel free to post a comment. That is an example of something that could skew the poll, and thus the results are not really reliable.
Obviously, there are some people who really cannot say when the SDB started, so you'll have to give it your best shot in the poll, or just post a message.
The question is, if you have been overweight and had SDB at the same time, which do you think came first for you?

Re: POLL -- Which Came First?
I know I had OSA before the weight gain. I was skinny all my life and probably had OSA all my life. It wasn't until I started CPAP that I started to put on weight.

Re: POLL -- Which Came First?
voted for had gained weight after - but the weight is only 30-40 lbs and I only gained it in the last 5 years or so. Since I have been snoring badly for over 20 years and my BP has been fluctuating for about 10 I am positive I had it at 115 lbs - now I am 145 lbs. So yes the weight came much, much later.

It would be useful to poll women who are nowhere close to menopause, which would confound results, as menopause will increase OSA, both by increasing weight and via other hormonal issues.
Anyway, I have always been relatively thin, so there's no relation between SDB and weight for me, although I'm sure every pound I put on does not help.

SU,
I'm post menopause (or at worst, still in menopause). Still weigh what I did in college and a bit LESS than I did in high school at 103 lbs.

I am post menopause too and at menopause was 115lbs (was 105 in university but you could count my ribs - had a locker on the 11th floor and after the riot none of the escalators worked)robysue wrote:SU,

CPAP is giving me the energy I need to do the diet and exercise.
It's the only way I could have done it.
Not finished yet: 14 lbs down, 26 to go.
I thought It was funny--all those responses and no messages..
Guess I wasn't first..

I voted but didn't reply but I thought I was crazy that the replies were gone. I thought I had dreamed them.

I didn't know someone else could delete my reply unless they called it Spam... It wasn't Spam, so that would be misuse of the Spam button. Anyone know a good attorney?!Pugsy wrote:I voted but didn't reply but I thought I was crazy that the replies were gone. I thought I had dreamed them.

They can't delete it unless they use the spam button. I didn't look at the poll right away because I was doing something else. I went and looked at choices and saw a couple of comments, but I didn't vote then. So I came back later to vote and they were all gone. Blackspinner name was showing as last posted on that of the forum but the when I came back to vote, no comments...I though weird, but I hadn't paid that much attention the first visit because I had something else going on.SleepingUgly wrote: I didn't know someone else could delete my reply unless they called it Spam... I think I can delete my own post. Only other way for me to remove anything is with the spam button.
So whomever pushed the spam button did it on purpose. It is not an accidental thing..

Re: POLL -- Which Came First?
I think I have had OSA for a long time, probably since my late teens or early 20's. when I met my wife at 19 i was 135 lbs, at diagnosis (last July) I was 232 lbs. I was also Dxed with Type 2 diabetes last July, since then I have lost at least 30 lbs. I now weigh between 195 and 200 lbs. I plan to loose more this spring and summer. Oh and I still have OSA and my pressure needs have not changed.

Re: POLL -- Which Came First?
Hindsight is always so clear..... sigh.....
Looking back, I think I've had OSA for at least 30 years. I started feeling chronically tired in my teens/early 20s but of course just ignored it and thought I needed more sleep. OSA was never a consideration with all of the docs I saw over all those years where my complaint was exhaustion--most just wanted to put me on an antidepressant or told me to get counseling (I knew I wasn't depressed!). In desperation I tried a few of the antidepressants but they didn't help at all and made me feel odd. I was a tall and skinny kid and young adult and very physically active. I didn't put on any weight until my late 30s, and that coincided with thyroid problems that exacerbated the exhaustion even more....or were maybe even caused by the chronic sleep deprivation. Physical activity decreased from 30s on because of the increasing exhaustion and genetic knee problems worsening with age and wear.
Of course, OSA wasn't even being diagnosed way back when, but it certainly was becoming more common in the 90s.
I'm grateful to my husband for telling me that my stopping breathing at night was upsetting and worrying him; without that, I still wouldn't know and I would still be telling my doctors I was exhausted all the time. We've only been married for four years now, so it was new information for me. I never even knew that I snored!
Now I even have days where I'm NOT tired and I'm beginning to see that there is life without feeling tired all the time. Better late than never!
Weezy
