Another pr system one question.

Post by Patches » Sun Feb 27, 2011 12:54 pm

The past 3 nights have been bad. I've been using cpap a little over 2 months. Had a follow up changed my doc changed my setting fom 6 to 7. That night I couldnt sleep because of the sound coming from my machine. It was 10x louder. I read over and over some threads about possible solutions. Here's a summary of what i did:
- i lowered my machine even more it's now about a foot and a half lower than my bed. (used to be about 6 inches)
- i put a towel under my machine.
- tried sleeping further from it.
- bought a sound machine yesterday
- lowered my cfex setting from 3 to 1
- i even changed the setting back to 6.

I missed work today because i have not gotten a good night sleep. I tried to nap yesterday without the cpap and woke up with a headache and a sore jaw ( i grind when i dont use cpap) i am so tired . I ended up reading more threads trying yo find other solutions.

My question is ... Did i miss something i need to do to cover this sudden noise from my machine? Is it possible my machine is malfunctioning or something from the change of pressure? I am on rental can my dme exchange this if it is malfunctioning? What are common return policies of rental?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

It's possible the noise is coming through the hose and directly into your inner ear. It's called conducted noise. One solution is to move the hose so that it does not touch anything like pillows or covers that is also touching the back part of your head---the part behind your ears.

Don't have time to write more. But if you do a search for "conducted noise" on my posts, you should find some links where I've given tips to other people who have asked about what to do about noise.

Got to run off to ski ....

Robysue, thanks. Yes i have read those threads as well. My hose is over my head ( i use a hose mgmt) and is not really touching my pillow. I checked over and over because what you discussed about sound conducting in solids made sense.
Enjoy your ski!

I noticed louder sounds after taking my machine to the sleep clinic, too. Not sure why. It seemed to quiet down later. Try detatching and reattaching the humidifier--maybe the connection is the reason.

I tried removing the humidifier and putting it back in but it was still loud last night. I actually slept without using my machine last night.

Did you take your machine to the doc, or did he change the pressure on the card?

Often the machine will be louder due to a mask leak. You could try adjusting the mask to see if that will quite the machine down.

The doc changed the pressure om the card. He blocked all settings so i took my machine to dme. Dme gave me new card and changed setting on the machine.

I have not experienced any leaks either.

I also unplugged and replugged my machine just in case.

Maybe,i will try to remove the humidifier tonight. Im waiting for a call back from dme.

I called at 2:30 at the dme and they said my rep will call me back. I tried calling again but they said since it's 5:30 they will not be able to help me. Past office hours. I have to wait till tom. Geez! Another long night for me.

Mine makes noise too and the only way I can sleep with it is to use a sound machine. I use the Ecotones machine and am addicted to the rain sounds on it. I have trouble when I travel without it. I try to drown it out with the air conditioner's fan being on all the time. It's not a real loud sound but I hear sound like I'm scuba diving. It drives me crazy. Even running a fan in the room can drown it out. Just about anything that creates a white type of noise. I think if I used it enough without the sound conditioner I would eventually get used to it.

You won't get any sympathy from this crowd for not using your machine. You should get it checked out by the DME, but MEANWHILE try to mask the noise with white noise and KEEP USING IT!

Conduction noise can be a big problem to beginning CPAP users. Sometimes you just have to hold face-up with no side sleeping, otherwise the hose noise is telegraphed to your ear. Your overhead hose adaption is usually a very good set-up. Pillow leaks can contribute to the noise factor. However, That is a very good mask that you are using and is usually leak free if adjusted properly.

I don;t think adjusting the flex is going to change the noise any, but will change the "rhythm" of the sound in your ear.

You might try even putting the CPAP on the floor or even under the bed. Hose should reach easily or you might get an extension. I have the same machine and it is very quiet compared to my last Respironics RemStar Pro.

Im sorry it was not my intention to get any sympathy about not using it. I have been 100% compliant since day one 2 1/2 months with an ave of 6-7 hours of use. I stardted having issues thursday night. I am just super tired from lack of sleep that i gave up last night. I have been on a war path with the dme and i did buy a sound machine saturday. I am merely trying to find out if my machine broke from the pressure change or something. Or if i missed any other way to make the motor sound go away.

The noise you hear is probably the same as me but "MY" noise is more of a bellowing sound which is relative to my breathing in my mask, it use to bother me but now it doesn't, Ya' just have to keep trying every nite and talk too your dr before having dme to change pressure, they arn't allowed to do that w/o a drs. prescription, I just had mine increase from 10 to 12 because I have gained almost 20#'s, now that I'm sleeping good I'm eating good--good luck--FA
