How long to get your first cpap?

Post by cathomas » Sat Feb 26, 2011 5:54 am

Newbie here just had my titration study last sunday night. They faxed over my script to American Homepatient who said they would call me when my cpap was in. It is now Saturday, still no call from AHP. I called them on Wednesday and they said they hadn't received anything for me. Anyone want to relate how long it took for them to receive their first cpap unit? From the data on my titration study, I'm almost having panic attacks going to bed knowing I *need* to be wearing this thing and can't.

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to learning from all the more experienced hose heads!

This wait is fairly common as sad as it is. First of the week it probably should be in but some DMEs are very slow. Depends on how long it takes the shipper to get the equipment to them.

In the meantime it would probably help if you educated yourself on what to expect and what to look for.

Do you have any idea which machine? Do you know that there are machines out there with software available so you can track your own data? Do you know that there are machines out there that only offer compliance use (hour many hours you used the machine). Do you know about data capable machines?

Have you got a copy of your sleep study yet?

Rested Gal has composed some very useful posts. I would suggest that you take some time and look through them, especially the one that talks about DME and equipment. Look here for lots of reading material if you haven't seen it already.

I got mine the day after my doctor saw the results of my titration. He had his office call the DME and put a ~RUSH~ on my order. By the time I got home, there was a message on my phone to call the DME and make arrangements for them to come over.

Often there is a delay getting Insurance approval.

You need to push your sleep doc to fax over the Rx to the DME. You need to insist on an apap [not cpap] unit, you need to insist on a full data capable unit. If they don't agree to above, call your sleep center and fight for it!

Then call the DME back and ask for customer service. I read the collective wisdom section right after my sleep study and before my titration so was fairly informed by the time to 'order' the machine.

Good luck.

Thank you all for your replies. It means a lot to know there is a community like this out there. It's a scary situation to be in by yourself! I have read about the data capable machines and the cpap vs apap so I feel like I have a little leg up coming into this. I have an appt with my sleep doctor on March 2 so I will discuss with him the rest of the info you guys brought up. In addition to my OSA I also have severe RLS. I'm currently taking mirapex after several days on requip. Requip made my symptoms twice as bad, so I literally felt like the walking dead. I'm doing much better on the mirapex. I'm currently on .25 mg but will go up to .5 mg next week.

Again ty all for your support
