Lowest O2 reading?

Post by Swordz » Sun May 07, 2006 12:36 am

Put me down for a low 83%, but I know I'll definitely get beat. Anyone ever find any info on what is clinically considered bad? I'd bet my low 02 readings are the main reason I feel so crappy.

How low can you go?!

82% myself. The times I've mentioned the subject to nurses they've all consistently said any time you drop below 90% they want to put you on supplemental oxygen immediately.

MY O2 sat was 68% during the sleep study. I have no idea what it is now. Will be trying to purchase an oximeter to use with my cpap.

Thank you,

Before I went on O2 at night (for COPD), the DME did an overnight oximeter test. I must have woken up half a dozen times that night and looked at the machine each time. Three times it was down in the 40's and the other times in the 50's. Needless to say, the insurance company did not have a problem with me going on oxygen! You would think with numbers like that I would need oodles of the stuff, but am only at 3L.

low 02

Post by Ellen » Sun May 07, 2006 3:45 pm

My 02 dropped to 50 more than 50% of night during nocturnal oximetry - got pneumonia last August which progressed to severe pulmonary edema and my sats were below 80 - when they wouldn't go above 83 with supplemental 02, went through multiple courses of prednisone to decrease imflammation.

I believe I have pointed this out before and I speak from the experience of a person who came near to death from lack of 02 and have to watch it carefully (now have supplemental 02 5L at night only UNLESS SATS DROP BELOW 90% - then must get right on oxygen.

As I have stated before - anything below 90% and your organs are not getting enough oxygen to function well. SWORDZ - I know how bad this CPAP sucks AND maybe you need to be on supplemental oxygen - are you 83% during day or at night with apnea??? 83% is very serious BUT EVEN WITH SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN - IT CANNOT GET TO YOUR LUNGS DURING APNEA - so the CPAP is SO CRITICAL.

I have multiple health issues that I AM WAY TOO YOUNG FOR and no matter how bad CPAP (mine is actually AutoCPAP) sucks, if I want to get to any kind of quality of life I MUST BE DILIGENT.

If you require surgery GET THE SURGERY - but please don't wait around any longer than you must, as you are just to young to be in this kind of shape and I know how it changes your whole life.

PLEASE TRY TO MAKE CPAP WORK UNTIL YOU CAN GET SURGERY!!

low 02 sats

Post by Ellen » Mon May 08, 2006 11:35 am

I sure hope you people are talking about your oxygen sat lows during apnea, as if you have these readings during the day - YOU ARE IN DEEP DOODOO!!!!!

The surgery I referred to in a note to Swordz is the surgery he's thinking about - go to his first post that started this thread.

These extremely low oxygen sat %'s you all are reporting surely are from sleep studies or nocturnal oximetry tests done DURING APNEA AND BEFORE CPAP!!!

If these were preCPAP sats, wouldn't you be interested in 02 sats since CPAP? My DME will do nocturnal oximetry's for free as often as Rxd by PCP. Some of you should look into this and see the dramatic difference in your oxygen saturation levels since CPAP..............it's an eye opener.

Swordz - Again I ask, is your 83% sat from sleep study or during day or night now - and how are you checking it?? I'm a little concerned about you...

Anything under 88% is considered detrimental to your health and would get a RX from your physician for oxygen equipment.

85% - Original sleep study
97%-98% - waking
post sinus surgery:

95-98% with AutoPAP and Swift or Activa.
95-96%, occasional 92% with Aveo TSD
92-96% with one or two short dips into the 80's with simple anti-grind mouth guard. (actually using my DIY tongue guide.)

readings based on my Nellcor N-395 Pulse ox (except sleep study)

My understanding is that OSA TREATMENT starts at either 4% desat below "normal" or below 90%.

Which makes me wonder if running most of the night at 95-96% with a couple of dips to 92% is "good enough"?

Sure would be nice to dump all the CPAP in favor of a dental device! (on top of the sinus surgery I had.)

I hit a low of 58 during my study. I think the doc said anything below 92% starts to effect brain function.

Hi, could the Nellcor N-395 Pulse ox plug into an S9 Resmed CPAP and show up with the RsScan graphs?

i voted 70 and lower. my o2 went down to 75 then they put a cpap mask & cpap on and my o2 continued to drop to 70. it was stabilized around 85% with cpap. i really want to buy an o2 sensor for at home to keep track of it
