Weight loss using cpap

Post by SUNSHINE06 » Mon Dec 26, 2005 8:17 pm

Hello,

One month trying to get used to cpap and still having problems.
Not enough air coming in. I am set at 7 right now. Second sleep study for titration is this Thursday night. Hoping things will even out. Presently trying remstar pro c-flex. .

The only thing keeping me going is that maybe I will lose weight once I have been on the program for a while? How many have been successfull in losing weight just using cpap alone?

Thanks

weigh loss?

Think of CPAP as "breathing". That is important. But I don't think you will find much credible testimony that "CPAP alone" leads to weight loss. I haven't seen very many weight loss programs that didn't include caloric restriction and/or exercise. Successful long-term weight loss usually includes exercise. If the CPAP makes you "FEEL THE ENERGY", and the "ZEST", then maybe that will lead you to the other two important factors. Caloric restriction should not be confused with "starvation", you still need a healthy balanced nutrition. Starvation is not compatible with good exercise habits.

Sunshine,

I have been on CPAP for one year now, and have not seen any significant weight loss. I have, however, noticed many changes in my body. For one, I used to have terrible GERD and would have heartburn every single night. My heartburn has all but vanished and I no longer have to take prescription medication for it. Just an OTC prilosec every other day and I'm good.

I have also noticed that my body will actually tell me when Im full. I used to just eat and eat and never felt full, but now after I have had enough, my body tells me, "I'm full."

I also have a LOT more energy than I ever remember having. I don't fall asleep at my desk, and I'm not always wanting to take a nap. I even feel the urge to exercise, and have started to do so. I just feel the need to get up and do something instead of just sitting around. Hopefully with some dietary changes and my new exercise program, I'll lose the weight.

I had several people tell me that I would start losing weight once I started on CPAP, but it just didn't happen. But I think I've had OSA for so long, my body just needed this time to heal itself inside and now it's time to take care of the outside.

Just my two cents worth.

Thanks
