I'm soon to get an adjustable bed where i can sleep with the top of my bed in a recliner position. Am wondering if I left the cpap machine off if I sleep in the recliner position where my head is not flat on the bed, would i still have apneas? I know none of you can tell, but wonder if I could sleep like that, and just use a mouth guard , perhaps an anti-snoring device that comes from a doctor? Just wondering about it, how this new adjustable bed will affect my sleeping. (i have had intense back pains since October and I hope this will alleviate it, but it may help my sleep too.
maybe I can even wear just the nose pillow mask and not that crazy chin strap which squeezes my head too tight at night
Is there an Alternative to Cpap therapy
Re: Is there an Alternative to Cpap therapy
I would imagine that sleeping in a bed that will adjust to recliner position would then be like sleeping in a recliner.
Lots of discussion here just recently about taking naps in a recliner. Do a search of the forum for naps in recliners and see what all was said.
There is no for sure way to know for sure if such a significant change in either position of sleep or even one of those mouth devices except by a sleep study using it. An overnight pulse ox might give a wag but is not a for sure way.
I do understand the back pain though, really I do. I will offer that when I got more of my back pain in control, I found I was finally seeing some improvement in my quality of restful sleep. I have had over 20 years of back, neck and pelvis pain. It does take a toll on a person.
Instead of looking to ditch the cpap, try to make it work in the adjustable bed. For sure talk to your doctor about it before doing anything drastic. Upright sleeping doesn't mean you won't have events.

Hey thanx! I will use my machine with the new bed, coming tomorrow - thank God coz my back is killing me.
I looked at that device you stick in your nose, but wouldn't it cause you to mouth breathe and cause that problem?

Yes i see the same issue. In fact it tells you to breathe through your mouth. I couldn't find any details on clinical studies.mary ct wrote:Hey thanx! I will use my machine with the new bed, coming tomorrow - thank God coz my back is killing me.

Re: Is there an Alternative to Cpap therapy
I have an adjustable bed--have had one for many years. I still had apneas even with my head raised quite a bit--hubby said the position of my bed made no difference in the fact that I snored and stopped breathing all the time.
Now with my auto, I do not notice any difference in either pressure needed or AHIs on the nights where I'm sleeping up versus sleeping flat. It's also no problem to use a machine with the adjustable bed because they don't go so far up or away that it impacts anything.
And they are heaven for people with orthopedic issues! I hate to travel now because I don't have my bed with me.
Weezy
