Help me square these numbers?

Post by sleepio » Mon Feb 14, 2011 7:19 pm

I just bought a "used once" Remstar Plus M. In front of the guy, I showed him that it had 676 blower hours on it. He continued to stick to the story that he used it once, apparently 2 years ago when he bought it new for over $1000 .There was an unopened bag with a white and grey filter. There was a filter on the back of the unit that looked perfect. I bought it anyway because - impulse buying is my weakness. Also, I'm an idiot.

Here's the numbers:

Therapy hrs: 152.0
Blower hrs: 676.0
Total sessions: 11
Compliance Check: 4374

Did this guy use this thing as a leaf blower?

Well it was obviously used more than once but in the grand scheme of things, not very long. Looks like 11 sessions or nights. Might not have been as "new" as it was represented to the person that originally bought it. Disregard the compliance number. It means nothing.
There was some explanation quite a while back as to why the blower and therapy hours didn't correlate but I forget what it was.

If you got a good deal on it I wouldn't worry so much about it. I doubt his $1000 retail on it but maybe that was DME price. Cpap.com used to sell that machine for a little less than $500 way back when.

I guess you are aware that the Plus is not data capable but otherwise it should serve you very well. 2 years would be about right. That model was still available and being sold when I started Cpap in May 2009.

Don't know what you paid for it during your "impulse" buying but a few hours of use won't hurt it any. Those are really relatively low hours in the big picture. Maybe it was a DME loaner that was sold as new to someone who didn't know how to check?

The numbers show that it was used for more than 1 night. It says 11 sessions and, of course the hours tell a story as well.

Hope you got a good deal!

If it's got a smart card slot, you can at least get compliance data.
If there is no card, you may want to consider looking for a new machine. Fortunately, you've got an inexpensive tide-you-over until you find the right one and a reasonable backup if you ever need one.

Did you pay much for it?

Thanks for the replies.

Pugsy: Yeah, I figured maybe it was a demo model or something when showing folks how to mask. The deal wasn't so great but it's done. I wasn't aware of the limitations of the data capability, I just saw smart card and I thought that was it. Oh well.

Dreamdiver: Does the compliance data from this unit give me stuff like leak, apnea events, ahi? Isn't that all I need?

mdboze: Haha, excellent. You made me smile

No unfortunately all this unit gives is "compliance" data. Hours of use. Nothing else. You want something that actually shows therapy effectiveness data.

Was this machine supposed to be a backup machine??? If it is to be your primary machine and you wanted fully data capable, it will not be what you want. So sorry. That "data card" doesn't hold what you want. You would need a different machine.

Sleepio, compliance data Is only the hours the machine is used( DMEs need this so they can be paid by medicaid or insurance) there is no efficacy data (AHI , leak, RERA, VS. ) collected by that machine. IMHO it would be OK as a back up, but not useful at all for monitoring therapy. Hope you didn't pay to much. Kathy

How could it have been used for 11 sessions if the blower hours are 676? That would make for some very loooong sessions. I don't know what constitutes a session, though, so maybe it was some kind of demo or whatever.
