Why will my PM's sit in my outbox for 24 hours?

When I respond to a message, they sit forever. Is that a setting I need to correct?

Pm's only disappear when the recipient opens them.

Private messages will show in your outbox until the message is opened by whomever you sent it to. Nothing on your side of things can be done to change it.

It is a nice feature, actually... at least once it leaves the Outbox, you know the recipient has opened it!
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.
