For those that have been on this forum for a while, we all knew that it was just a matter of time :

Sad, indeed. I'm sorry for the death. But this is not the first time this has happened.
Somewhere in N.M. there was a case like this on "1000 Ways to Die", the TV show. (I usually don't
watch this, it's too gory for me), and a cockfighter was clawed in the throat and died.
(the caption was "Cock-a-doodle-die")

Cockfighting should be made a felony, as it is in some states. A year, at least, in prison
would be a just punishment for anyone caught doing this despicable act for money or
entertainment. Just like the show on TV says: "Don't try any of this at home - you will die."

Darn, I thought I would be first to report on the man killed by a rooster (have also occasionally feared being the first man killed by a rooster, but that's a different story). Here is the version from http://www.cbs47.tv/news/local/story/Ma ... 9bXxA.cspx

Man Killed by Rooster at Cockfight

Details have been released on a bizarre death in Tulare County.

A 35-year-old man was killed while attending an illegal cockfight near Earlimart.

Investigators say Jose Luis Ochoa was cut by a razor attached to the rooster’s leg.

Lieutenant Rick Ko with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department showed CBS47 some of the weapons used in cockfighting. They are tiny razors attached to the rooster’s leg that they use like knives during the fight. “We've seen people cut with minor cuts when they put on the knives ... but nothing severe,” said Ko.

Tulare sheriff's deputies showed up to investigate the illegal activity and people scattered. At that time, one of the birds apparently jumped at Ochoa and the knife on its leg cut a major artery in the man's calf. He died at a hospital in Delano.

Authorities believe this is the first time a human has died as a result of a cockfight.

Lieutenant Ko said, “It's still against the law to participate in cockfighting, to be a spectator at a cockfight, and raise animals particularly for fighting with paraphernalia.”

The sheriff's department says there are often a lot of other crimes associated with cockfighting, such as drugs, illegal gambling, and animal cruelty.

The OSA patient died quietly in his sleep.

No sympathy from this quarter.

All I can say is I couldn't get past the headline. I have a real phobia about chickens. Always have. Always will. Get visibly upset at the sight of a chicken (or rooster) walking around anywhere within sight. Worst thing about going to college at William & Mary was the chickens wandering around Colonial Williamsburg ....

And I'll go find a nice hole to go crawl in and pull the hole in after me to protect me from the chickens that are going to take over the world. They are you know. It's their secret plot---they are out there biding their time .... And one day, when no one suspects, they will get their revenge on all humankind ... they're coming to peck out our eyes in our sleep ....

I wouldn't have believed this but when we were living in the country and had a water softener system that required large heavy bags of salt, the delivery guy, this 6'4" hulking brute carrying 4 bags of 20Kg of salt yelled for me the shoo the bantam roosters out of the court yard before he entered! "Mama won't let me kick the customers chickens and they always attack me" he said white faced and tight lipped frozen on the spot until the banties were shooed into their cage.
