Help.....Runaway Pressure

Post by bigcat » Sun Dec 18, 2005 1:09 pm

Maybe someone can help. I have a Spirit Auto. I didn't sleep well last night, so laid down today for a nap. I noticed the pressure was really high.
My pressure is set at 10-18. It was topped out at 18. So, I turned off the machine while sitting over the top of it, turned it back on and it went to 18 in about 30secs.

I don't have any leaks, as this happens immediately while I am awake. I tried 2 different masks and checked tube. My highest ever 95% pressure was 15, but usually 12-14.

Any ideas? Thanks

My first APAP was a hand-me-down Autoset Spirit and it did the same thing to me. It would wake both me and DH in the middle of the night blasting enough air to breach the seals on any of my masks. At that time (maybe April?) I searched the CPAPTALK archives and found several other similar cases.

Using a Remstar AUTO now .

Hasn't happenend to me with my Spirit. I did hear that if you overfill the humidifier it may cause the problem.

The one case that I heard on a ResMed machine was water on the top of the rubber seal on the humidifier that ran into the sensor hole at the air output of the machine. I also read a few comments that Remstar machines can also have have problems with runaways as well.

It is strange, it stays on 10 for about a minute then will max out and stay there. I filled the humidifier last night and read the data from last night, it was fine and never maxed out.

Thanks for all the information. I have access to another machine, so I will let it sit for a few days and give it another shot. I hope this works.

When not in use do you unplug or switch it off at the back of the spirit or do you let it breath. When not in use with humidifier installed the spirit will operate at a very low speed to prevent water from entering as vapor may condense in the pressure sensor or the blower when it is off. This causes the problem you describe.

Good idea to let the unit set a day or so to be sure that any moisture near the sensor can dry out! I had the runaway event in my first week and found out that it was indeed too much moisture! Once I cleared that up, everything was fine!
I was in a cpap fog until I came here to learn!
