So I got another email from cpap.com suggested things to get for my cpap in the coming year and there was a bottle of peppermint oil.....
I am clueless here,,,, what does one do with the peppermint oil....
I am obviously missing out on something useful......

Re: Peppermint oil
Personally, I like the way my sinuses feel when it's in the air. But my wife says it's a stimulant so why use it when you want to sleep? Oh yeah, bedrooms are used to other things....Good luck Lou.

Re: Peppermint oil
Some cpap users like aromatherapy as a helpful way to ease into sleep. This is done by putting an essential oil or aromatherapy product near the intake filter at the back of your machine so the scent can be carried through the hose to your nose. I use the ones from Pur-Sleep .
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

Re: Peppermint oil
Hi,
I am an aromatherapist who trained at Purdue University and with some of the best teachers in the USA.
Peppermint oil is a stimulant. It will not aid in sleep, but dedlay it.
Also, peppermint oil is also a profound irritant for mucous tissue. Do not get any in your eyes (let alone other sensitive areas).
In England and France, aromatherapy is taken seriously as a medical specialty. Lavender is the oil that will offer the greatest sedation effect at the least expense. You do not buy blends that are typically far more expensive than simple oils.
And those simple oils are not so simple. I suggest shopping for oils ONLY with very reputable aromatic sources. I suggest Organic Swiss Aromatics. Google the name. Their reputation is superb.
In regards to how much, and how, less is more in aromatherapy. I am new to cpap, and have not yet used essential oils with my S9, but I know how I will.
I would put one drop and NO more of a lavender maillette (a lavender cultivar that is high in esters and alchohols, the chemicals compounds that promote relaxation) on a tissue and put that behind the air intake on the S9. You should barely be able to smell the oil, but it should be a pleasant additive to fresh air.
unfortunately, the essnetial oil industry is one of the most dishonest around. People can claim their oils are clean and unadulterated, but that doesn't make that true. If the pep perming oil you are using does not stimulate you, I would be wary. There are psychological affects from certain oils at could overwrite the chemical effects, but, on the whole, you should feel more alert and energized after smelling a good quality peppermint oil.
in a study in England, SMALL amounts of lavender promoted sleep as well as a sleeping pill.
For about $15, you can get about 15 ml (equivalent to 1/2 ounce) of a very high quality lavender oil. There are about 900 drops in an ounce so you would be spending $15 for 450 drops. VERY cheap.
Always store oils in a cool dark place. Never leave them uncapped. Do not buy oils from the health food store or from any spruce that will not provide paperwork guaranteeing their oils are genuine and authentic.
Aromatherapy can be a pleasure and remarkably effective, but you need to buy the real thing.
Hope this helps.
Namaste,
MoonBear

Maybe an open jar of Vick's behind the machine will clear up my sinuses!

When I'm congested I have put some Vick's on a tissue near my air intake. Don't know if it helps or just makes me think it does.Lizistired wrote:Maybe an open jar of Vick's behind the machine will clear up my sinuses!
Some have heard me tell this before, but for those who haven't... When I received my first essential oils from Pur-Sleep, it was a sample pack, and I sat in my chair repeatedly inhaling each one back and forth trying to decide which one to use first. Next thing I knew it was a couple hours later and I was waking up feeling like I'd been drugged. That was the deepest sleep. I was used to sleep attacks where I'd be "overcome". But I can't think of a word that quadruples the meaning of overcome.
MoonBear, thanks for the warning about unscrupulous vendors.

Could you post some links to where you get yours, or to reputable brands? Thanks MoonBear!!MoonBear wrote:

Re: Peppermint oil
A few weeks ago, I had to go to my chiropractor. I was also at the time having a sinus infection. He took some peppermint oil and put on my mustache, and gave me the rest of the bottle. It felt great to my sinus. So, that evening, I put one drop of the oil in my water reservoir and enjoyed it so much. It made my sinus feel so good and I slept like a baby. Now, with my cpap, I fall asleep as soon as I put mine one. And I don't notice the stimulant effects of the peppermint oil.
So, a few days later, I was at the ear nose and throat doctor, for the sinus infection and swelled tonsils. I asked her about using the peppermint oil in my cpap and she said it was fine. And she was the doctor that prescribed my sleep study and cpap. So, I trust her. I use the peppermint oil about ever other night and really enjoy it. It might be hard on the reservoir, but I get a new one every six months anyway.

Re: Peppermint oil
Do not, I repeat, do not put anything but water (preferably distilled) in your reservoir.
If the smell is too strong, a cotton ball behind your machine can be moved farther away, as far as needed.
I would not be happy having to scrub and refill my tank in the middle of the night.
Not only that, but the silicone gasket may absorb scent that cannot be washed out,
should you not like the scent as well as expected.

@moonbear:

Is there a danger of getting lint in your air intake? Is a diffuser necessary?I would put one drop and NO more of a lavender maillette .... on a tissue and put that behind the air intake on the S9.
thanks, Jean

Re: Peppermint oil
If anyone is interested, peppermint oil is also used as a deterrent to mice (on little cotton balls put where you think they're coming in). At least it's humane. Well, you asked.

At last; a way to keep mice out of the hose!
