How do I stay OFF MY BACK?

Post by Tired Linda » Mon Dec 27, 2010 10:27 am

Imagine my distress this morning when I woke up (to the alarm) and realized I was sleeping on my back on top of three tennis balls . I have no idea how long I slept that way, but I was quite cozy. I put 3 tennis balls into a knee-high tube sock and tied each ball off with a piece of old shoelace. Then I took a bunch of safety pins and pinned them across the back of my shirt by my shoulder blades. Up until last night, it worked fairly well. I know I have an extremely high tolerance for pain/discomfort, but gee whiz, now what???

I did a search this morning and found jnk's old thread where he talks about sleeping with a pair of sandals strapped to his back:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=43225&st=0&sk=t&sd= ... ck#p382660

I doubt that would phase me unless it was a pair of stilettos (maybe that's the next thing I try). I also found Rooster's bed for side sleepers, but that is out of the question unless it comes in a double. The thread also mentions someone rigging up a bicycle helmet (interesting, but I'll need to find one).

Pillows are of no help, as they end up on the floor. My hubby sleeps on his side, and I've tried using him as a body pillow, but he's like sleeping next to a furnace.

Any other suggestions?

Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

The Zzoma is good but you have to sit up in the bed to change to the other side.

I use a small backpack with a rigid empty water bottle stuffed inside it.

If you have money left over from the Christmas budget, you could buy a new mattress.

Amazingly but true - get a mattress that is a tempurpedic type, (if too expensive, MAYBE a mattress topper made of that same material). I swear that i wake up in the same position as when i fell asleep because it totally cradles you and keeps you from turning and tossing in middle of night. it makes it a bit more of an effort to turn from my back to my side, haha but it may solve your problem.

I would say Mary T is on to something. The reason why you flop onto your back is important. If you move off your sides...is it because your hips hurt? Or your shoulders? If so, you might invest in the foam or latex mattresses to relieve those pressure points.

I thought of a real inexpensive solution. You go to the Thrift Store and purchase a used bra of ample cup size. When you go to bed you place 2 softballs in the cups and put it on...............backwards. Now you won't sleep on your back. I thought this was pretty cool. I live alone. Then I changed my mind when I realized what if something happened during the night and the police or fire department came and found me like this. I told this story at a family get together, as I am not the only hose head. On my birthday I received a unmarked box of used bras.

What is so wrong with sleeping on your back? It is my understanding that this is why we have CPAP because most events occur while sleeping on ones back. I wake up on my back every morning and since CPAP, everything is fine!

If you write sweetly to Dolly Parton, perhaps she would mail you one of her used bras. Put a volley ball or soccer ball in each cup and wear that backwards. Bet you won't roll onto your back then

But seriously...Most of my events happen when sleeping on my back. And my CPAP works great to keep them under control.
You could try a Memory foam pad: a 4-inch deep one from Walmart cost about $150 for a queen size. It keeps my hubby (also a hosehead) from rolling onto his back, but doesn't work so well for me. Each person is different.

Good Luck
Cindy

There is nothing wrong with many people with sleep apnea sleeping on their back!

See the thread on page 2 entitled, "Confused about back sleeping". The thread was begun on Dec. 27,2010. Read the whole thread.

If it works well for you, do it. But for many others, viewtopic/t43360/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=43 ... 79#p384179
