Some Constructive Mask Ideas

Post by mikemoran » Thu Dec 08, 2005 9:13 am

I know I do have quite a few flights of fancy in this department, but on the off chance that someone from the manufacturers might actually read these posts here are some that might actually work. Maybe Johnny can get these to the right folks.

Port-O-PAP

I know the technology is available so why don’t we have a portable CPAP mask combo? There are quite a few devices out their with solid state miniature fans. If someone could integrate a small battery operated fan onto a mask I know it would be appreciated. This fan could be set at a low pressure of 8 or 9 which would not alleviate all events but greatly reduce many for most patients. Some CPAP is better than no CPAP. This type of active interface would be perfect for travel. It also would allow folks to have a more convenient device to keep by their easy chairs.

A Halo Mask System

Is a mask really necessary? The biggest issue is compliance and the discomfort of a mask against sensitive parts of the face. I don’t know if this is viable but it seems to me that breathing in a wind increases the pressure of the air flowing into the body. My idea is to create an Arc shaped delivery system. This would fit above the neck and direct air at the head for the full 180 degrees. Thus allowing someone to sleep on their back or side while still receiving therapy.

The force of the air would be a true breeze directed at the face with enough force to achieve the prescribed pressures. It would require a new type of CPAP blower and possibly a special pillow to tilt the head enough to ensure the nose or mouth is in position. Heating and humidification could be provided without the problem of condensation.

Without the current feed back this could only be a CPAP. Compliance should increase because all a person has to get used to is some wind in their face at night. I am not an engineer so I might be totally off base but it is a direction as a user that I would like explored.

I was thinking the same.

I too have pondered alternatives to the "geek from outer space" look. With miniaturization as it is today, fans, electronics, etc., I was imagining implants of some kind. I don't think the technology is quite ready just yet. Maybe a compromise. Perhaps a small fan of some kind that you could put one up each nostril, with all the advantages of airflow monitoring and correction, data recording, etc. Probably would be good to conceal the propellers somehow. Or not. For severe cases or high pressures, small external propellers might be necessary.

Power supply? Would probably have to be nuclear powered to achieve sufficient energy density in such a confined space.

Now that I have thought about it, I can see this really catching on, big time. No red marks on your face. No tangled cords. No rainout. Maybe a shredded pillow now and then. Angry spouse. People might wear these just as a fashion statement, I can see it happening.

propellers is good. add some bat wings and this will be very useful. not just for breathing.

Shimari, are you making fun of my invention? *sniff* *sniff* *cry*
Yes, I can tell by your avatar, that is the case.
Well HUMBUG !!!

OK, here's the deal. I will set right to work on the propellers thing. I expect to be rich and famous in say two, maybe three weeks at most.

Meanwhile, YOU work on the bat wings part. (I'll even sell you a new set of propellers, discount). If you do it right, AND if it flys, AND if you can catch bugs with it, I will declare it a success. (do you plan to use sonar?)

DEAL ?

Hey, I think I know just the right soft stretchy material for the bat wings! They even come in colors!!
