Help my Swift fx starts whistling in the middle of the night

Post by Pliezar » Sat Dec 11, 2010 2:02 pm

Hi,

I am have been on my machine for almost two months, I have just suffered through my first cold, and I am starting to get over it now, it was hard using the Swift FX. I have been using neti pots and secaris to help with some of the left over congestion.

Now my mask starts whistling in the middle of the night (which my wife says she cannot hear, but drives me nuts). I have a good seal, and the pressure is normal, does anyone know what I could be doing wrong or what is causing it. I should mention I have to use extra small pillows (this makes my wife laugh because I am a big guy)

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

The first thing that comes to mind is that you may need a new pillow, sometimes they only last a few weeks, so if you haven't changed it , I'd try that first.
Any landing you walk away from is a good one; if you don't break your airplane it's excellent.

I have heard of people putting on some kind of lotion (nothing that would break down the plastic like petroleum jelly products).. Maybe someone here who does that can give an idea. I think the idea is the lotion makes the thing adhere to your face better. I have not tried it yet. Squeaking means air is escaping. You can maybe try the little fabric things from Remzz that helps air from escaping.

Thanks to both of you, I have another pillow, so I will try that first, then try some using my secaris.

I too have had the whistling on occasion, It seemed to disappear after washing the pillows with baby shampoo.

I think it has to do with sweat & oil from skin being trapped either in the pillow or most likely the exhaust vent on the short hose.

Wash them both thoroughly, I use an old toothbrush to clean the vent on the short hose.

Whistling can be caused by water or gunk collecting in the exhaust ports holes. Try cleaning the holes out.

For the newbies searching for a fix - letting us know what fixed it would be great.

So what fixed it?

The Swift FX is a nasal pillow mask. Nothing touches your face!!! That whistling could be a very small leak. Try pushing against the base of the pillow ( just above your lips) and see if it stops. Or pull the pillows out slightly so they inflate and reinsert. I can hardly believe I wrote this. Just a week ago I was struglling with this mask and now I am giving advice!

I was 5 when I taught my 3-year old brother to read.
Nothing surprises me.

Mine would whistle from the little exhaust holes at the short hose connection, I used one elastic hair band borrowed from my wife to cover just the top couple of holes. That stopped the whistling for me, it was driving me nuts. I made sure I didnt cover but a couple of holes as not to affect exhalation of CO.

I found the whistleing only a problem when ambient humidity levels were high and related to the level of the heated water chamber. In fact, one night during camping in a cold wet environment, the whistleing was constant and would not go away even without any water in the chamber. That night I ended up placing a cotton ball with bandaids over the vent ports to silence the noise but not block the exhaust. On occasion, I still have a whistle if the humidity levels are too high which is alleviated by simply turning down the heat level on the water chamber.

Good Day and Happy New Year to all of you

I had an appointment with my Respiratory Technologist/DME and we tired some new pillows and also I was again shown how to put the mask on correctly. I also gave my whole mask including head gear a good cleaning and washed my face really well before bed. I had one case of whistling during the night, but I reposition the mask and went back to sleep. I had 6 hours of sleep last night and it was glorious. I just have to learn to put my mask back on after my son comes in to wake us up and it is not my turn to get up.

Thank you all for helping a new guy through some difficulties.

Cheers
