Do you sleep all night?
Do you sleep all night?
Just a little curious....
I'm wondering if you are able to sleep for 7 or 8 hours without waking up at all?? My sleep doctor says it is "normal" for people to wake often in the night (with our without SA). He says very few people are able to sleep for 8 hours without waking. He thinks I'm making too big of an issue out of this.
I am able to fall asleep with no troubles, but I wake 3 or 4 times a night. I feel like my therapy is going well, but I think I would feel much better and more rested with some uninterrupted sleep. My therapy is going well (just past my 3 month mark), my AHI averages around 1.8, and I have no mask leak issues.
So, tell me, please.....Are you able to sleep all night?

My first 17-18 months, I slept straight thru the night, usually around 8 hrs...that hasn't happened since

Re: Do you sleep all night?
It is quite normal to wake every 90 minutes or so. You might not always be able to remember it, but typically everyone wakes after every sleep cycle to some extent. Sleep cycles through all the stages several times every night. So long as you can go back to sleep, this is normal. You just may be one of the 'lucky' people, like me, who remember most awakenings. But this does not mean you're not sleeping well.

Re: Do you sleep all night?
You seem to have the opposite problem of me. I have a hard time falling asleep but never awaken once I fall asleep. I usually sleep 6-8 straight hours each night.
This wasn't the case when I first got my machine and was using APAP mode. I got the Viewer software and found out I had good results at a certain fixed pressure. I changed it to that pressure and all of a sudden I slept through the night. My Sleep Dr. told me that some people are very sensitive to changing pressures. If you have an APAP you might experiment with a constant pressure and see if you sleep better.

Re: Do you sleep all night?
I can sleep without waking up 7 to 8 hours If I don't have problems with my sinuses getting blocked or with hot flashes
When I sleep without waking up I feel more rested and with more energy when I wake up.
I noticed if I can have the proper humidity level and I have the rhinitis under control (I use Nasacord or Omnaris) life is gooood. In summer time I slept almost every day without waking up in the middle of night. Maybe that's not common ?

Re: Do you sleep all night?
In "Sound Sleep, Sound Mind" by Dr. Barry Krakow he encourages people to avoid looking at their clock during sleep-times because all of our "how much more time do I have to get my sleep in?" thinking is counter-productive to turning off our brains and letting them sleep. When I wake up I make a real effort to not think about the time and trust that my alarm will work, thus not even look at the clock. Sometimes I fail and old habits win out. But I find it helpful if I avoid finding out what time it is.

Re: Do you sleep all night?
No, I do not sleep straight through the night, but it is not due to my cpap. When my sugar is up, it's potty runs. Or my hip hurts too bad to be comfortable. Or my limb movements are acting up. If those other factors were not present, I bet I'd sleep thru the night most of the time. Before my hip got bad and when my limb movement meds were effective, I could easily go 7 hours without (remembering) waking up. Don't know if it's true, but I've read that of the wakeups we remember, there's likely many more we don't. Keep in mind that even an AHI of 1 means there were 8 events over the course of an 8 hour night with potential to cause arousal or wakeup. Factor in normal awakenings, and it could make for an unrestful night. All we can do is address any known issues and see how good we can get it.

Re: Do you sleep all night?
Before CPAP I woke a few times a night--reflux about 1 or 2 a.m. some nights and night sweats about 4:30 every night (I learned that these night sweats were really severe apnic events). I woke with my heart racing, drenched in sweat, full of very negative thoughts and could not go back to sleep for a few hours after those 4:30 wake-ups.
With CPAP, no more reflux, but I still tend to wake around 4:30. BUT, I wake peacefully, calm, dry, and I just sort of notice that I'm awake, then fall right back to sleep. Sometimes it creeps closer to 5 or 5:30, when my husband usually gets up to work out. I have no trouble going back to sleep now, and I wake refreshed and calm when it's time to get up.
I used to want to stay in bed in the mornings because I was not rested. Now I feel SO good when I wake up I just want to lie there with my mask on and enjoy it for a while. A very different experience.

Re: Do you sleep all night?
I am aware of being awake usually once during the night. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and stiffen up during the night. When I have that one awakening, I get up and go to the bathroom and back to bed. I fall back to sleep immediately. That "once up in the night" leads to a little less stiffness in the morning and getting up is easier. On the very rare night that I sleep right through, I am much stiffer in the morning.
For this reason I am glad to be awakened once a night ( that I am aware of). Before I was getting better OSA therapy, I would be wakened maybe 3 or 4 times in the night with pain. The therapy gives me more and deeper sleep so I am not wakened with pain during the night.
Of course, there are rare nights when I am aware of being awake more often and sometimes I wake about a half an hour earlier than my normal time and cannot get back to sleep. I don't worry about that because if I did, I would have more nights like that.
My average night is just under 7 hours sleep with that one time up.

Re: Do you sleep all night?
I sleep like a baby, waking up every 3 to 4 hours and wanting to be fed. I honestly can't remember the last time I slept through the night. I think it might have been before children. I finally have come to terms with my sleep patterns and don't obsess on how many hours I got in sleeping. I still have an occasional bad night, but most mornings wake up feeling good and that's all that matters.
