The Importance of a Good Pillow

Post by Willtry » Fri Dec 10, 2010 4:00 pm

I thought I would broach this subject and get the views of as many people as possible. I have looked aroound and have not found any suject covering this Topic , yes I know someone will say this has been covered before but still This is the subject The Importance of a Good Pillow. I am a side sleeper and had trouble with leakage the way I have resolved this is to use a small pillow in other words one that my head will just fit on to but the mask hangs over the side this way no pressure is placed on the mask to cause leaks. Also the total hight to me was inportant if I did sleep on my back My head would not be at too much of a angle to cause an event.

I'm a side/stomach sleeper and before buying a CPAP pillow, I had a couple of very small neck pillows and a couple of cylindrical ones with fine polystyrene beads. I kinda shaped these and moved them around for a week or so until I worked out what configuration was most comfortable.
I ended up buying a pillow with a "C" shape cut out of each side, so when I'm laying down the mask is in the void of the "C" but my forehead and chin are supported by the pillow. This works equally well on side or stomach - for me.
I think it's a matter of experimenting and I wasn't prepared to spend a bunch of money up front to have a number of pillows I couldn't use.
I am thinking of buying a Regenesis buckwheat hull pillow as well for a change, and from what I read here, they are very comfy and easy to mold into the shape you want (and the shape remains).

Good luck!

Cheers,
xena

Did you do a search here for "bed pillows"? I'm sure there's over 100 pages on this subject. In my opinion the most important thing after finding the right mask would be finding the right bed pillow. We spent quite a small fortune trying to find "the one". This is the one my husband finally uses with success. https://www.cpap.com/productpage/SleePA ... illow.html. Others use this one, http://www.pur-sleep.com/products/prodD ... rch=&page= or this one, http://shop.talkaboutsleep.com/cpap-pil ... e-papillow. Some lucky ones use a memory foam contour pillow from Walmart. As you see, this is a hot topic. Good luck.

Finding the right pillow is sort of like finding the right mask. It's essential, but you won't know which will work best until you've tried it. People have devised very clever solutions. I use a small buckwheat hull pillow (about a fourth of the hulls removed) on top of a memory foam pillow. I like how it keeps its shape, and my head and neck get good support while the mask hangs over the edge.

My guess is that this is as variable and personal as the mask itself.

I am a side sleeper and what works best for me are two regular type pillows on top of each other. One is a very thin on the bottom. The top one is a hybrid memory foam pillow. It has the memory foam on the bottom and a very soft feather filling on the top. It seems to give me good neck support but yet allows my nasal pillows to stay in place on my nose. I know when I had the Zest nasal mask I seemed to prefer something firmer that allowed the mask to hang over the side.

I know this sounds weird - but it works for me and it isn't expensive. I was looking for a very thin pillow on the bottom and actually found it at Target for only a couple of bucks. All the other pillows caused the height to be too high or did not give me the proper neck support. This gives me just the right height and support for my neck without messing with my mask.

Xenablue, where did you get the CPAP pillow and how much was it? I am a side/stomach sleeper as well. As much as I try to stay on my side, with a body pillow next to me to avoid rolling on my stomach and to support my legs, and as much as I try to sleep at the edge of my memory foam pillow, I still wake up throughout the night with leaks in my nasal mask.

I am a back sleeper and have found that a memory foam contour pillow works well for me. My neck is not long so I use the smaller side to go under my neck. The contour keeps my chin up and forward so that I believe, my airway is more open than it might otherwise be.

With AHIs under 2 and an almost straight leak line, this appears to be the best bed pillow for me.

I envy all you guys/gals who CAN pick out a pillow to use.

For me, it doesn't matter what I use because my pillows never stay where they're supposed to! Over the years I've tried dozens and dozens of different pillows of every size, shape, material, and quality. All of them felt great when my head first hit the pillow, but during the course of a night's sleep, they're all over the place doing me no good at all.

Since starting CPAP, I've settled into a nice 2 pillow combo. A medium thick foam pillow on the bottom, and a nice thick down pillow on top of that. While I'm still awake, it works out fine, even with my tossing & turning. However, when I wake up, the pillows could be anywhere...except under my head!

I am a side sleeper and often roll over to the other side during the night,ll. I actually have found that I like a "firmest" foam pillow that I can find at Penney's or Mervyn's. They keep my head at a good angle and I can sleep toward the edge of the pillow and the hose hangs over the side. When I roll over in the night, I end up on the other edge of the pillow, lol. They are really cheap, usually under $10, and I treat myself to a new pillow every couple years. Pretty cheap investment, I think.

Has anybody in Australia been able to source a good CPAP pillow locally at a reasonable price?

As you can see from my avatar I wear a full face mask, and I'm also a side sleeper.

Google seems to tell me that these pillows are only able to be shipped from the USA. Surely somewhere sells them in AUS?

This one is $173.95 delivered ($116 shipping....must come by private jet); https://www.cpap.com/productpage/SleePA ... illow.html

&

This one off Ebay is about $90 delivered: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/New-Bed-Pillow-C ... 1e59b58939

I gotta agree with some of the other folks in their replies. The Regenesis Pillow, (http://www.pur-sleep.com,) is great. Fully adjustable by the amount of buckwheat hulls you install (I, too, use all but about 1/4 of what is supplied.) The great thing about the pillow is it seems to retain whatever shape you position it in far better than anything else I've tried. The hulls seem to stay put, and it doesn't break down and/or move around like feather or foam.

At dollar stores and variety stores you can find rolls of this bumpy rubbery material meant to be used as a no slip shelf liner. Cut a piece of this slightly smaller than your bed pillow and lay it under each pillow. That should stop them from moving around.

Either that, or get some pillowcases made out of things other than Teflon
