PR System One REMstar Auto Filter Cover ?

Post by The Dreamer » Mon Mar 15, 2010 5:13 pm

Hi everyone
Does anyone know if they make a Whisper Cap or a Silencer Cap, that goes over the filter for the PR System One REMstar Auto?

Thanks Ron

Good question, I tried the whisper Cap from my M but it does not fit, same size filter but joy. I brought the one I have on CPAP dot com so if anyone has them they will.

I called Respironics today and ask them about the Whisper Cap or a Silencer Cap, they said that they don't have one the PR System One REMstar Auto yet, but may later on.

Hi Ron,

I have the non-auto CPAP machine like yours and have been using it (my 1rst time on CPAP) for about 2 months. I'm wondering if your original question here indicates that you find the air intake/filter to be too loud? I have nothing in my own use experience to draw comparative conclusions, but I'm back to sleeping on the couch and not with my wife, because the air intake with this machine and motor/fan noise, when pausing between inhalations and exhalations is too freaking LOUD! I know that some of the noise is transmitted up the tubing, but I've even taken the mask off the tubing and stood above the machine to test the noise, just inhaling through the tube end. I'm having a hard time sleeping, because it sounds like I'm using scuba gear! If I use the machine in my bedroom, the corner location for machine placement amplifies this intake noise and I can't sleep at all!

I feel pretty discouraged at this point and feel like a whiner, but this seems ridiculous. I went for a new mask fitting and was in a room with 5 or 6 other people. One person had a new RemStar machine like ours and another had brought along her ResMed S8 Elite. When both were using their machines and testing their new masks, the RemStar sounded just like what I have been experiencing at home, like there was someone using scuba gear (admittedly more subdued) in the room. The S8 Elite, was virtually silent to me sitting across the table from them. I could hear the mask of the woman using the Elite, but could hardly hear the machine at all. Both women had the same new masks.

At this point I've been waiting on Apria to get an S8 Elite II in for an exchange, but it has taken them almost 3 weeks so far and still no machine. When I went for the initial fitting and class/machine pick-up Apria gave all 6 of us the new RemStars and that appears to be all they carry on hand. kind of weird I thought that they gave us no choice whatsoever in machines????

If Apria follows through and I can switch machines, I'm doing it. The Whisper Cap that you mentioned sounds promising, but the actual difference in machine air intake noise was VERY pronounced to me.

You hit the nail on the head. this cpap is noisy. I don't know if I will be able to sleep with it or not. I didn't fall asleep until 3am last night, and I went to bed at 10pm. The old REMstar Auto that I was using was very very quite.
This one changes sounds when I inhale and exhale, but nothing compared to the two new Sandman Auto's I sent back, they would wake the dead.

Thanks for the reply... at least now I know someone else shares my opinion/experience! IF I wear headphones and listen to my iTouch... music or talk show, it masks things pretty well, but really doesn't make for good sleeping. I'm probably just being obsessive, but I could swear that my machine has actually INCREASED in noise in the couple of months that I have used it. Occasionally I will take a nap and decide to just forget the machine and it is sooooo nice not to listen to that scuba tank respirator! The MOST annoying thing to me is the change in sound/noise when I pause between breaths. I'm sure it has something to do with the C-flex kicking in, but that increase in noise when I'm not breathing to me sounds like sticking your hand over the hose of a vaccum cleaner. No new machine at Apria yet today. I think they are hoping I'll just forget about it.... not very likely!

Curt

Also.... I got the humidifier with my machine as a package. Apria says they won't accept the humudifier back, so if I want a humidifier with the S8 Elite II I will have to buy one outright. They'd sell me one for $250 i think I'm going to argue that the machine is defective and I want them to take back EVERYTHING, as they never offered any other machine option. If not, maybe small claims court?

fwiw- wonder if you have a defective machine or hose or???

PR 1 that I have used for several months is not noisy- in fact it was mostly its extreme quietness that\
made my mind up to get it- [ tried s-8 too- PR 1 is way quieter using my mask etc-

perhaps check for leaks etc- PR 1 is not a noisy machine at my house

my wife literally asked if machine was on the first night I used it- so something is different in your application
than mine-

good luck in whatever you do Packer

Thanks for the reply Packer!

I've been noticing that most people who have the PR1 systems here seem to like them and there have only been a few complaints about noise. Funny though that Ron and I seem to share a similar experience. Unless I simply don't know what to expect as normal, my machine is definitely NOT quiet! As I posted, at Apria, there was a VERY pronounced difference in noise characteristics between a woman using a PR! machine and another using an S8 Elite. I wish Apria would allow for a comparison check of machines, but they say that is against their policy... besides which it appears that they carry the Respironics PR1 as the only system in stock.

All I am sure of is that given what I have, I couldn't imagine being a happy camper long term!

I Called the place were I got the cpap, and they said that the noise the Respironics PR1 makes is normal. He said that in fact all the smaller cpap's are like that.

Here is something I did yesterday, and it lowered the noise level about 50%.

I put a 3/8" thick rubber mat under it. and since it seemed that most of the noise was coming up thru the hose, I took the thin weight hose that came with it off. And I put my old heavy hose on it. And it completely eliminated the noise coming thru the hose.

I was able to sleep last night just fine. ( The hose was the biggest problem. )

good job with the detective work

I have my PR1 sitting on a little box 2 inches off floor- and used the old hose and mask I had-

and PR1 was was way quieter than old "aflex" machine and s-8 [ s-9 not around when i bought]

a while ago someone was replacing their machine because of pinhole leak in hose which "howled" and got blamed on blower

that is what is hard about CPAP- so many variables- leaks- mouth breathing- bloating-
noise, uncomfortable masks- rainout, bed partner problems etc etc etc

1 mess up is enough to make us want to quit- and we often are on our own- until we find this site-

I am convinced I would have quit 2 weeks in without the knowledge -- now going like 3 1/2 years under 1 AHI Packer

Thanks again guys for the replies! Maybe I just have too high of expectations and little experience to know what is normal. I just know that I don't want to have to wear headphones and play music forever to mask the machine! LOL It's hard to believe that what I am hearing is normal and considered to be VERY QUIET! LOL Will try re-positioning the location of my machine to see if that helps. I had wondered about hose sound... Don't see anything on the internet about quieter hoses for sale though! LOL

HI- I have newly got this system, but mine is EXTREMELY quiet- I actually had to check to see if it was on! Just thought I would add my experience. Hope that you can resolve your problems quickly, for those who have had them. Don't give up!

Hey guys, one more question... On your machines, if you remove the air intake filter and look at the intake, is it just an open hole? I'd guess that it is as that is what mine has. My point in asking this is that all the loud intake, and pause between breath motor noise comes through this bare/open intake hole/port.

I can't imagine how the noise this port makes on inhalations could be considered "quiet". But, like I've mentioned, this is my first machine and I might have had too high of expectations of "quiet".

If somebody could check that intake port, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks...

First, I am getting the System one auto (on order), but now have an S7 lightweight that is breaking down and making a lot of noise. One thing I noticed is that it sounds louder when I'm wearing my mask than when I just block the hose (the S7 is a non-auto cpap, so it doesn't affect the pressure.) This doesn't help with the spouse who finds it loud. For the person that was in the room with different people and machines, are you sure everyone had the same pressure? This can have an affect on sound levels. Also, I have my machine on a heavy duty open TV table, with the top exposed on all sides (and underneath). When I took it in to be looked at, the tech put it on a solid looking "closed" desk (one with drawers built in underneath) and it was definitely quieter on her desk. Same effect as the rubber mat above.

I just got a system one after using an older model for 9 years and it is much noisier than the older model ... They have decibel ratings for all the models and I think the pr 1 is supposed to be around 29 or 30 ... The quieter s9 model is 24 decibels ...

You can hear a recording of the PR System One noise here http://mysite.verizon.net/toddlorensinc ... 1noise.mp3
